Fentanyl Patch (Page 9)
UpdatedCAN ANYONE TELL ME HOW TO KEEP THE PATCH FROM COMING OFF AFTER SECOND DAY ? I SHOWER A COUPLE TIMES A DAY AND ON THE SECOND DAY THE PATCH WON'T STAY ON.THEN YOU USE MORE THAN WHAT IS PERSCRIBED AND YOU RUN OUT OF PATCHES AND THE INSURANCE COMPANY WON'T PAY FOR ANY MORE THAN PERSCRIBED, THEN COMES WITHDRAWAL?
I can see many people have lots of ideas but I hope mine will help you. If you are using a patch that has the gel in it or if the entire patch does not have the sticky across and down the entire part that you place against your skin, you will have these problems. My solution is the manufacturer. Ask your pharmacist to order your patches from APOTEX as they are a thicker piece of soft tape material that 100% secures to your skin from edge to edge. It will not come loose. I put it on my back so I don't brush up against it. If you sweat a lot, I would ask the pharmacist or call the manufacturer for further help. Good Luck!
Hi I started with bioclusive which is & was a total PAIN in the ass to figure out how to pull each piece off.. Ugh! I still have 2 boxes from before the Fenty generic was approved. So was by Johnson & Johnson & they sent them to me free.. 200 a month :-) But as yrs went by I've used Tegraderm 3M. They are the best on the market. BUT since I switched to Mylan patches 25 no need. Lets just say I'm in the far south east & it is the absolute WORST state if you have medical issues. We were in Colorado most of my life & started on the patches in 2001 & was prescribed properly... as tolerance became issue I was given 50 then 75 then 100 as needed. & other for break thru pain. Down here they don't believe in prescribing.. So what I get I should be totally lucky I even get that. Of course it is linked thru whole state when & what you are given, all details. Kinda like driving, states are linked.... Anyway. I wish more than anything I could go back to Colorado but, am lucky to even walk to mail box..... They think that people who abuse them are everyone on them... Down here it is soooooo prejudice! I hate it so much. I can take a script if I visit to Colo & no question asked just be filled. Down here if I go to anywhere outside of county or from where I normally get them I am refused because I'm told they can't fill it due to the enforcement agency... Which is all bull s***. But anyway I'm venting.. am very sorry. I wanted to say thank you for the extra info on the OPSITE FLEXIFIX.. In case I need to use it.. Is it all have the green lines on it?
brands make a difference I can not tell you which ones work best as I am not on it. but I did well with all until last ones the pharmacy got and they had this problem. they are giving you the cheapest.
You can't reuse the Tegraderm overlay to keep patch on. As you may have already found out.
yes It is called "Tegaderm adhesive" & Amazon Carries it. It works really well and is Transparent.
You may use a Tegaderm clear dressing. They worked for me but they are expensive.
I Remember getting Bioclusive Patches Free From Johnson & Johnson. Someone back in early 2006 told me how to get them free so I told my mother & she called to get them also but she doesn't use them, she gives them to me. I was stupid to call them & tell them it leaves a Red mark around the where the patch was when I took it off. So they tell me that because of the mark they won't send it to me anymore. That ended in 2011. So use the Tegaderm now. Love em. What I hate and we probably all know why it stopped was the Fentanyl Patch with the Gel. I hate them without it. It worked so much better. One company Starting with a A (forget) as of early 2015 still had the Gel But for me 1 month through my Mail in Pharmacy I pay 15 for 3 boxes instead of going locally which can range from 59.00 to over 100.00. So it was a easy answer & go without the Gel.
1 Last thing. My Pain Dr. Gives me 3 boxes a month where 2 boxes is a months supply. He gives the an extra box because he knows they fall off. So now I stock up on that extra box so I didn't have to go to the Dr. each month but 5-6 weeks later.
But as I said above the Patch became a PA Drug (Prior Authorization) & my Dr. Never called to say I needed it & the Mail in Pharmacy sent him 3 Faxes over 2 months & his staff said he is working on it which he did not So I Pulled off the Patch with 1 box left and Went Cold Turkey. Worst feeling in the World. No Methadone or anything else to take the Edge off. I could not take the Pills (vicodin or Percocet) as it Hurt my Stomach. Still have 7 year old Vicodin which does nothing for me. Now I see why I need to be put back on the Patch. WAY to Much Pain. From a 30 year old Back Problem to Fibromyalgia & Just recently Ankle surgery where when I cam out of surgery they put me on guess what Yes Fentanyl through my arm where the needle is. But went cold turkey a month before. Yes Dr.s. Know when they put us on this stuff they Know addiction it causes and we are Dependent on these Dr.s (same with Pills).
My Older sister in late 2008 Stole 2 patches (who never used them Ever) & put both on. My mom found her no responsive and called 911. She actually Died from Gallbladder Surgery in 2009. She Bled to death but without that Oxygen/Pulse monitor which they said was not needed. She stopped breathing & no one knew for how long. When it takes 15 minutes to Resuscitate someone you are all ready Brain Dead. (This happened in Delray Medical Hospital). I hate Florida Doctors, even my grandparents in the 1970's drove back to NY to see there Doctors as they did not trust them. I am Originally From Brooklyn NY if anyone out there lives me Give me a Shout. Sorry for long letter (I also Graduated HS On another sisters birthday & she too was Brain Dead From Qualudes which was very popular in the earl 80's till Reagan Made it illegal. I don't even remember my Graduation as as it was my Sisters birthday & she was in a Coma until they pulled the Plug & she died July 6 1983. Worst day in my Life till my fathers death in 2001 & other sister in 2009. ty. {edited for privacy}. take care all.
I use the clear elbow/knee sized Tagaderm patches. They are sold in pharmacies. I get mine in Wal Mart-$2.37 for a box of 8. My Dr. also has me change them every 48 hrs. to help control my back pain.
I solved the problem of my estrogen patch falling off by 1st scrubbing my skin with Hibitane (Germasil will also work) and leaving it on up to a minute before rinsing off thoroughly. Once skin is dry, apply the patch and ensure complete adhesion by rubbing over it with a dry cloth or towel for about 10 seconds. I have found it to be 100% successful. Patch stays on for the entire 7 days and I have to really peel it off.
Apotex was better for me. but used to have much better ones. when they had the gel inside. when they changed, and medication was more evenly distributed, they don;t stay attached sometimes even one day.
Getting off fentanyl is not easy, first of all you need support, second you need a good doctor, one that listens to you, every one is different and getting off fentanyl has a different withdrawal for every person. What works for me may not work for you. I was on a 50 every 48 hours for the last four years, and a 50 every 72 hours before that. The medicine did take care of the pain I was having but not without giving me other problems., like they say be careful what you wish for. Now for getting off the drug the first time I failed, I couldn't deal with the withdrawal and the family problems that was happening at that time. That made me think I need a plan to do this so the first two months of getting off fentanyl I just went from 48 hours to 72 hours very little withdrawl, then cut to 37 for two months then 25 for two months, than to a 12 for two months now off completely. With very little withdrawl. So yes it took a while to get off but it worked. And yes you need someone to tell you don't give up there is life after fentanyl
fentyl patch falling off. talk to your pharmacist. they can tell you if you can apply tape or another adhesive or order from a different generic. Apotex worked better than Mylan. talk to your pharmacist.
I went cold turkey and It was the worst but I dealt with it. I took it off Mid March and after 1 week I lost 42 pounds. I did not take Methadone or anything else. It became A Prior Authorization drug & my pain dr ignored it (3 faxes & dozens of phone calls. So my mail in Pharmacy sent me back the scrip after sending to them February 3 & got it back sometime in March. I had no choice but to rip it off as I wasn't going to get it anytime soon. Now saw the Dr (broke Ankle March 3 in 3 places so couldn't do anything & still can't but u got to do what u got to do.. So the dr gave me my normal 100 McG fentanyl but when I brought it to the Pharmacy the guy said if your not taking any pain killers then I should not go back to 100 MCG as it is too much now. So he was gonna call the Dr last Thursday (9th). He also Prescribed Something Totally New but it is a take on Percocet (oxy). Not much said about this med "OXAYDO" but it works faster then just plain Percocets (Oxycodone). Hard to find info on this & my Pharmacy never heard of it also. When a Dr gives you something new it is usually because he is getting a Kickback on it. You can print a coupon saying you pay no more than $15.00 a month. It is described as an Immediate Release of the Drug where most could take upwards of an hour to work. It is said that with it working so fast people won't overdose as much as many people take 1 then another and so on coz the pill doesn't work so fast.

More important, the flexifix holds BETTER than Tegaderm! MUCH BETTER!!!
I spend hours a day in a hot tub because of my arthritis. The tegaderm came off in the hot tub and in a shower. Flexifix do not. I change my patch every other day because they don't last three days. I have needed to change a patch early because of sweating and water leaking behind the patch twice in the last five years!
If you go into a hot tub like I do, make sure you bring into the tub an ice cold drink to keep your core temperature down while you heat up your muscles. Hot water also speeds up the rate at which fentanyl is absorbed, so be careful if you are a new user or have recently increased the patch size. I would never take break through pills and then go into the tub.
I live in a very humid climate. Tried all of the tapes mentioned. The tape will not stay on either. My dr is aware but doesn't seem concerned. HELP !!
ERIC~ I read your post on FENT PATCh & about your sister.... So sorry to hear that. I lost my sister in a similar way. She had NO tolerance to morphine. She hated them or anything like dilaudid. She took them for more than just pain unfortunately. She loved her Percocet's. Her doc was prescribing her 580 pills a MONTH!!!! for over 5 yrs! Crazy!
But when she was out.... She tried anything just about. Her friend gave her around 8-10 of 60mg ER & IR's. She crushed & snorted in around 2-3 days :-( She was well educated on all this so she knew what she was doing but unfortunately, she got to that point of drug black out & had no idea just what she'd done.. Also took her night meds on top of that. 1 or 2 in one night. Her nightly consisted of trazadone (sp) Flexeril 10 mg, Benadryl, along with her strong antidepressant (forgot which) Apparently had more than normal amount of Flexeril in her system as well. I wish I'd know. She told me, that she would be very careful not to take anymore if not feeling it.....I tried to get her to just throw them out. They wouldn't help... Trying to convince her.... Anyhow.... She passed in the night.
As far as the Fentanyl patch & the original brand name.. I've been on the patch since 2002 & back then yes Johnson & Johnson sent me 100 at a time of bioclusives...The sub to the brand with gel is by Watson & normally is at Walgreens. To be honest I still like the original best.... BUT.. other than, MYLAN has worked best for me now. No need for 3m or anything over the top & I shower & have gone in pool. It is extremely humid here too. Once in a while I have one that doesn't stick well. We use a cotton ball after taking old one off & wipe with 98% alcohol. Then reapply to other side of my upper / shoulder blade area of my back. IS BEST place. Any other area never will stay on. So picking a spot is just as important.
I'm in FL & absolute HATE this forsaken state!!! Whats called the medical system. Am originally from Colorado.... Been here 10 yrs now. Following my heart for another... Anyway.. Am seeing that it is hard to get our scripts filled in other states too...
If you contact the company that makes your patch, they sent me all the tegaderm which is a big clear patch like they use when they do an i.v... They gave me all I needed for free. There's one one market called nexcarearlier but they r very $$$$$.
Yes they sell plastic covers at the pharmacy for 28 cents a peace or you can buy them in a box. They work very well, just ask your pharmacy and they can find them. If not, write me back and I will send you more info.
I just started on the patch and had the same problem of keeping them on. (even after reading the directions) now I just put on two small pieces of tape used for sensitive skin. It works but I haven't really showered with them on. My problem is my shoulder so I bathe. Hope that helps but I certainly use super glue! LOL
Use Tincture of Benzoin (surgical skin prep), Dr has to write you for it.
