I am now on and have been for years, oral Kadian. Kadian is brand name morphine sulphate. I tried the generic but wen into withdrawal. Now that I am on 40mg Kadian orally at the same time each day. I have no problems. None! Everyone should keep in mind that these meds work different on each of us. It is important for you to have a open honest relationship with your pain management physician. Build trust and follow the program. No excuses! Ask questions and keep track of your pain. You can be in control of your pain.

Just wondering and being 5-6 years since this post how you are doing with your pain and are you still suffering or did anything change?

Are you able to stay off pain meds WITHOUT pain killers now?

Myra, I have had back problems since 1990. I have had 4 major surgeries and nice I believe that the scar tissue is an issue now. I am still in a pain management program. I have been able to slowly wean myself off some of the higher doses. I still deal with pain everyday. I don't believe that my situation is typical. Many people use the pain meds in the beginning after a injury. However, being on them for as long as I have been on them is not good for your body. I don't get a "high" from my meds. I take enough to take the edge off the pain. I want to be able to feel the pain to know if it is still bad. This is not the way I would like to be living my life. If I were not taking my meds I would be back in a wheelchair. If I go to a small mall, I still need a wheelchair to get around. I can't walk very far. But, with the meds I am able to be up and around for awhile most days. Pain Management programs are tough. There a so many rules to follow. They heard every excuse you could ever try to come up with. They don't accept any excuses for losses of meds. None. They are now, at least in Minnesota only giving 28 days worth of meds at a time. Not 30 as before. They are keeping real close tabs on everyone, as they should. So now I have appointments every 4 weeks. It's not a fun way to live. But it works for me if i follow all procedures.

First of all, Never use more than prescribed. That is one way to not be able to get refills. Contact your treating physician, the one that wrote your prescription. He might order something else for you or he might even tell you to use the medical, paper tape around the edges. Sometimes you can get free clear covers from the manufacturer. However, if the patch itself is not tight on all sides to your skin, regardless of what you out over it, you are not getting the medicine properly.

I am so sorry to hear :-( Since May 24, 2000 (I will NEVER forget that day) I, too have excruciating pain.

Since the age of 29 I have had a succession of surgeries too. 15 and counting ... some major. some minor.

I disagree with you on one point. I have learned to NOT let my pain control me. I do NOT want to feel it - AT ALL.

You should be able to function. At the moment I don't have a lot of function.

If I had gotten the pain control that I needed right at the beginning, NONE of this would be happening.

People EDUCATE your doctors. THEY need to change.

I totally agree with following a pain management program. I have been to several. They are not one size fits all. It is VERY important to have the right fit with your doctor.

Other issues are happening in my body that I now must concentrate on.

It gets VERY depressing ... I think at some point, they really need to look at allowing people who have ZERO chance of full recovery, be allowed to die, with the help of a qualified physician.

Take good care.

I start with a warm wash cloth to the area then I use alcohol, then a warm wash cloth washing off any skin oils or lotions, then I dry my skin with a blow dryer, then after dry and still warm I put patch on holding pressure to it,I use my blow dryer again for just a few seconds to get the adhesive to get warm so to stick, I put my hand on the patch again and hold pressure for about 30 seconds. I usually put them on my upper arm, lower back, altrnating, I've found these to be the best places. I swim in a chlorinated pool 3-4 times a week and have great results. Also, the patch that I request is by watson, it's larger than the other ones, but I'd rather have their adhesive, it's much better, and I actually have less break thru pain with theirs.

I have been wearing Fentanyl for over 8 years. When I first got them they did not stick. We tried everything, washing the area etc. The pharmacy got a different brand. These are Ratiopharm. I wash my back and dry it then I put both patches on and press on them for 30 seconds. I have had none come off since. I swim, bath etc. If you get too much soap, moisturizer or creme rinse on them it can make them fall off. Also do not tape them on. It can affect the medication being distributed.

Peace, it is fine to tape the patches. If they dont stick the manufacturer will send you clear patch covers. I used the medical paper take around all four sides. It does not affect the medication being delivered properly. FYI

Tegaderm never worked for me, as I shower and like to swim!

There was one covering which was great! It is used by home nurses to cover a deep wound which was infected.

Can't remember the name ... if I do I will post.

Yes to keep a Fentanyl Patch on for the entire time 72 hours use a Tegaderm Patch over it!Tegradern has a window so you can see your patch. And Tegaderm breathes so your patch will not over heat!My information leaflet says to use Tegaderm in the Fentanyl package insert. And i just went back on the patch after 5 years trying other things because i went through a divorce and had to move to a different place and my doctor had me seeing a PA instead of himself.I called him at my wits end and had allready read about Tegaderm! Also i take MSIR 30MGs and Diazepam 10MGs Ask your Pharmacist.Tegaderm are not cheap($21.00 for 10) but so worth it.Good luck and stay pain free.RD

Since using Ratiopharm, I have had no issue of them coming off. I recommend. That if anyone is having problems with the patches coming off, talk to the pharmacist and have them bring in a different brand. Why pay for things to add on if you don't need to.

I agree! I have a MAJOR REACTION TO Ratiopharm - the glue or something ... I also react to almost ALL patches with redness and swelling. Sigh.

Wish I didn't need these darn things! :-(

There is a product that home nurses use when they wrap ... I really need to remember the name!

I'm using CVS Window Bandage. It's the same thing they use in Hospitals to cover an IV line. Works great, like a second skin n if you've ever had an IV you know how much of a pain in the a&@ they are to get off.

Yes a Tegaderm patch is a product that works best and is in the package inserts on several brands of Fentanyl...Its made by Nexcare a 3 M company and is available everywhere. the 4inch by 4 3/4 (101mm x 120mm)It covers the entire area and your arm will come of before the patch over the Fentanyl patch.make sure to hold the Fentanyl patch on when applied for at least one minute.then apply the Tegaderm patch over centering over the Fentanyl, Rocker D

Yea, stop taking so many showers and if you must for some reason - wrap the patch in plastic around your arm and tape it up so it won't get wet. Try a bath or shower once a day. Put surgical tape around the patch to keep it on. Shave all the hair off prior to putting the patch on . Bottom line. KEEP IT DRY

Plastic wraping tape will not allow the Fentanyl to breathe and will shorten the effect and half life!I tried that once with my old Doctor and she just gave me more. That was in 2007 or 2008,and before i looked like Alice Cooper.Where i live now that wont fly(getting more patches.)If the Fentanyl cant breathe that it wont last and "could "lead to damage! Why take a chance?
Put on the Tegaderm and white surgical tape all around the edges.I may not know a lot,but i sure as hell know my medications!
