Existing Percocet Prescription
(Newest replies first)

Hello. I have a standing prescription for percocet through my doctor. I go through the normal pain visits, etc. I will be having neck surgery soon and I am wondering: will they prescribe more for my recovery period on top of what I have? I understand you have to take more than normal at times due to pain after surgery and I am worried I will run out of my "normal" script that I can only get filled at certain times. In the nutshell, is it the norm to prescribe meds after surgery that you already have because of the increased amount/times you may need to take?

This is a totally different doctor/facility performing the surgery. I don't know if that makes a difference or not.
Hi Becky,
Q: "I will be having neck surgery soon and I am wondering: will they prescribe more for my recovery period on top of what I have?"
Q: "is it the norm to prescribe meds after surgery that you already have because of the increased amount/times you may need to take?"
A: Those are good questions actually. The most honest answer I can give is neither yes or no, simply because every doctor is going to treat this type of situation differently (with some willing to prescribe, while others not so much - especially if they recently wrote you a script that hasn't been completed yet). My guess would be no, it's probably not normal under your unique set of circumstances (and in this day & age of opioid hysteria), but that can be debated if you have a very compassionate doctor who doesn't care about what the DEA thinks they should be prescribing.
Does anyone else have thoughts to add?
