Exalgo Generic By Mallinckrodt

What are the differences between the brand name Exalgo (12 mg extended release) by Mallinckrodt and Mallinckrodt's generic formula of Exalgo? My doctor indicated generics, in general, can be "different" from brand name by as much as 30%. Since Mallinckrodt manufacturers both the brand name Exalgo and its generic, I am hoping they are the same. My insurance company wants to cut costs. Does anyone know what the differences are between the two? Thank you in advance!

Hello, Kate! How are you?

Under the Hatch-Waxman Act of 1984, the allowable difference is actually plus or minus 20% of the active ingredient, not 30.

As to the differences, if any, unfortunately, I don't have any information on that, as companies aren't require to note them. There is also more than one manufacture of the generic, including Watson Pharmaceuticals and Paddock Laboratories, so you can't be sure which one you will receive from your pharmacy.

The FDA classifies this medication as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.

The only thing you can do is try whichever one you receive and see how it works for you.

Is there anything else I can help with?
