Erythromycin For Sore Throat

I have a severe sore throat and I am feeling nauseous. I was prescribed this medication when I was pregnant because I cannot take penicillin. Will this help with my sore throat and help to kill the infection?

It really depends on what has caused your problems, since Erythromycin is only effective at treating, or preventing bacterial infections. Thus, if your illness is caused by a virus, such as a cold, or flu, it will not help, and taking it inappropriately could result in someone developing antibiotic resistance bacteria.

The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, headache, dry mouth, diarrhea, and non-allergic skin rash.

Ulana, your post is appreciated, but you should never tell someone not take a medication as prescribed by their doctor, whether they are pregnant, or not. (And she states the it was prescribed while she was pregnant, but doesn't state that she is still pregnant, at the time she was asking this question.) It just isn't worth taking such risks, while pregnant, since an infection can be fatal to both the mother and baby. While there are other things that the NIH lists as possibly boosting immunity, they should not be taken, without a doctor's approval.

You should try some non-medicinal interventions!! Your baby's health is @ stake! Gargle with warm salt water.. Drink decaf hot tea w/ a little lemon.. Get more rest.. Don't eat or drink to close to laying down to combat nausea.. Try Vitamin C drops/lozenges. There's lots of things to do!!

if you cant take prncillain i would not take urothomycian which is in the penacillain famly i cant either one there bascilly the same meds my sister took it when she was pregnant and her child had some problems but she took a bunch of different antibiotics so we cant blame it on that on but most doctors refrain from giving while pregnant
