Enbrel Induced- Optic Neuritis
UpdatedEnbrel induced- Optic Neuritis-Hi everyone, I am 29 years old and took Enbrel for 2 1/2 year (from 2010-2013). I had to discontinue use because I developed optic neuritis. IN the past 15 months my vision has worsened. My latest eye scan showed that I have lost 25% vision in my right eye and 10% vision in my left, IN 1 YEAR, due to the Enbrel induced ON. Please get your eyes checked if you are taking a biologic!!! Most biologics are associated with ON. Symptoms start as dull to sharp eye pain, vision changes, and head aches. Very important!!! The vision loss I have experienced in permanent but if you catch it early on it can be reversible. -------Much Love-----Elisabeth

Hi, I am 52 years old, have had Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis since I was 12 yrs old. Been on multiple medications over years, with increasing pain, fatigue etc. Started Enbrel for a few months, worked pretty good on my wrist pain, but not 100%. Came off and went on humira... anyways within a month I noticed my eyes bothering me more, with significant eye pain when I moved my eye and when it is still, feels like strained muscle. Eye exams normal at well respected eye hospital. Concerned reading all stuff about Enbrel and eye symptoms... anyone else have similar symptoms? Did you come off Enbrel? What did you do to resolve your symptoms? Did you experience the same thing on Humira?
Elisabeth, I am very sorry about what happened to you and it is greatly appreciated that you posted this warning for others.
The same types of eye issues may arise with any of the drugs in this class, due to how they work in the body.
However, if they've found nothing wrong upon intensive exam, then you're most likely just having transient side effects, rather than the serious issue that struck Elisabeth.
Are there any other questions or concerns?
Hi,
I remain concerned that I am continuing to have persistent left sided eye pain, on 15 mgs prednisone/day, and off biologics now for 2 months w/ persistent eye pain. I am concerned that the prednisone is masking the uveitis or inflammatory process in my eye, such that it is not able to be diagnosed clinically. There have been some literature describing Enbrel and other biologics causing eye pain. I think it is under reported. I am tempted to start Humira, which is said to be somewhat helpful for eye symptoms, but afraid to try as wondering what else kind of weird side effect and reaction I might have. Does anyone have any ideas re; any alternative options/ homeopathic/ herbs... anything that can help w/ acute inflammation... otherwise I think I am doomed to try another biologic and hope I don't end up blind?
