Effects Of Long Term Use Of Meloxicam (Top voted first)
UpdatedI"m a 70 year old female. Very active. Runner, short triathlons, lift weights and otherwise have a very active (hard working) lifestyle. I have been taking 15mg. Meloxicam tablet on average about two per week for about 6 years. Of course, I"m concerned about the side effects I"ve read about for long term use. Does taking them only two per week mitigate these side effects even if I"ve been taking them for a long period of time?

What is considered long term use of meloxicam? 6mos.? 1 yr? 2 yrs? At 15mg? and/or @7.5mg?
Can you cut the 15mg in half and stream line the usage for 2 months instead of 15mg DAILY over 1 month if the pain is ok at that lower dosage?
Also could you take a meloxicam one day and on alternate days an Aleve (1 or 2 @220 mg over 24 hrs to alleviate the DAILY potency of meloxicam?
Can you take it DAILY for a week and then get off for a week or so, and if pain returns start up for another week to nip the inflammation and then get off again? (for hip pain... and now knee and back, very bad =severe degenerative disc disease, both which are hurting due to aggravation of painful walking because of my hip....will eventually have to have joint replacement but possibly not for about 9 months if I can manage / stand the pain).
Sorry about all the questions, but I do not want to have a perforated stomach and bleeding and subsequent stroke, which ultimately terminated my father, who was a physician. Thank You.
Hello, Judy! How are you?
There is still some slight risk, but most of what you read about are effects from daily long-term use, not occasional. That's why others, such as Ibuprofen are available over the counter.
The most common include liver damage, stomach damage, increased risk of bleeding and stomach ulceration.
Is there anything else I can help with?
I hate it! It's on my "evil" med list! Let alone the risk of stomach irritation/ulcers, etc, it can cause liver damage, and heart problems! Thank the Lord for ibuprofen! You can take 200-800 mg in a day, with a Lot less risk than meloxicam, and it's over the counter! For me it has always worked better anyways, and I have had rheumatoid arthritis for 20 years. It's wonderful that you stay active! Good for you! I have learned to thoroughly research anything that is ever prescribed to me. That's something I wish I had known to do in my twenties...liver damage is awful! Good luck!
