Er Opiods Causing Blood Pressure Spike
UpdatedHi. I took Hydromorphone 4mg 4 times a day for 11 years, but doc retired and pain management insists on extended release. Oxycontin ER caused my BP to spike high then return to normal in 4 hours..unacceptable. Hydromorphone ER is doing the same thing. Is there something about the extended release that could be causing my blood pressure to spike? Had no problem before switching to ER opiods.

Hello, Jeanne! How are you? I'm very sorry about the problems you're experiencing.
No, these medications typically cause low blood pressure, rather than high. The FDA classifies this medication as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.
Is it possible that your blood pressure spiked due to your pain level? Pain is well known to cause elevated blood pressure levels, I've experienced it myself and it took several hours to lower, after having a pain medication administered.
How high did it spike?
