Drinking Alcohol

I am currently on my first week of Qsymia. I need someone's honest opinion and I will ask my doctor too once I see her again. I am not a big drinker at all but when I go on vacation I do get a couple of drinks here and then or maybe once a day. It's my vacation and I want to enjoy it.

Am I going to die if I have a drink or 2 or would you recommend stopping the medication for the week and half I am on vacation?

Hi Steph,

According to umm.edu's drug interaction tool, drinking alcohol while taking Qysmia is not recommended as it may increase or decrease blood levels of topiramate (one of the active ingredients in Qysmia) potentially resulting in more side effects and/or a less effective dose. They also goes on to note that the combination of alcohol and topiramate may cause a "severe reaction"; including seizures, confusion, slurred speech, dizziness and lack of coordination.

So if you do plan on drinking it's been suggested that patients wait at least 6 hours before and after taking topiramate in order to reduce the risk of interactions.

You can put each substance into the link below for reference:

I hope this helps!
