Ive moved to Australia from New Zealand and since arriving three months ago my face has had the worst case of acne ever. I did get a mild case of acne in high school but it got better over the years. Now since living in Australia Ive noticed extreme acne and red, puffy. itchy and dry rashes on my face. I used proactive for the first time a month and a half ago and that did help clear the pimples after a week or so but the rashes quickly spread and my face started burning. I then decided to stop using proactive and see the doctor. The doctor then prescribed me Doxycycline 50g which i have to take once every day for 6 months and also wash my face with a unscented, acne-free soap bar. My face did start to clear up but then quickly spread to other parts of my face. I did notice an improvement to the texture of my face but the scarring has gotten worse. I then decided to use proactive again seeing that the rashes on my face had now disappeared since taking the pills and now its worse off then it was before. My face is even more damaged, with more acne and the rashes are even more irritating. I am now reconsidering whether this new life in Australia is really worth the physical toll on my face. After reading the many entries on the net about the side effects to this drug I can't help but wonder the positives outway the negatives? Also, I was wondering whether anyone else taking this pill is feeling extremely tired, has low energy and has weird eating habits, extremely hungry somedays and then wanting to eat at all?

Doxycyline is an antibiotic, but yes, long-term use of it has been known to cause some odd side effects in people, such as what you are experiencing. These generally aren't studied and well-known, because it's usually only used on a short-term basis.

It almost sounds like you might be having an allergic reaction to something, either in your environment or something you are eating.

Have you considered consulting an Allergist or Immunologist?
