I've been taking Donnatal and/or Belladona for over 10 years to treat IBS. When it was time for a refill, I was told both the brand name and the generic forms have been taken off the market. I am lost with these meds, that virtually eliminated the discomforts of IBS.

I was called by my pharmacy today about the donnatal. To fill my prescription it would be over $800.00. Apparently CVS used a discount card on my first three prescriptions, but there is non available now. I am on SS and my benefits do not cover this medication. Therefore I cannot get it. My pharmacist was going to call my Dr. and recommend another medication. This has been a wonderful medication for my stomach problems. I don't know how these companies get away with charging these prices for medication.

You can call RX OUTREACH at 800-769-3880 to find out about free low cost Donnatal, they saved me! They fill the prescriptions 3 months at a time. Your doctor faxes it in and they send them straight to you.

Check with a compounding pharmacy to see if they will make a "generic" donnatal for you. I found one in South Carolina that would do 30 capsules for $100.

I have just been informed by Walmart that, BELLADONNA is no longer available, and the BRAND name Donnatal is $1,000.00 for 90 pills and not covered by Insurance. So who would buy it???

I take it for autonomic dysfunction. If I don't, my heart rate drops into the 20s then goes back up to 50 while I'm sleeping. I'm worried that it is no longer available in generic OR brand name.

After dealing with my insurance company for the last 3 months, I have to put my .02 cents in also. I too, have been using the elixir for appx 3 years, due to many combination of pain medications I have Secondary hyperhidrosis and the Donnatal allows me to actually leave my home without worrying about my massive (and embarrassing) sweating. In July when my refill was due, I start having problems with getting it refilled, speaking with the mail order RX, she states the insurance will not cover it....remember, I have been on this med. for 3 years and also the same insurance. I decide to look on the RX site for the price...$3,515.86 for 3 months (their cost) I previously paid full price when I first began the medication, at that time it was around $700 (3 month supply) What the heck is going on with the sky rocketing price with drugs? Poorest countries in the world do not have to deal with these types of issues because "THEIR COUNTRY" takes care of medical and schooling...I guess it is time to find ourselves a new country to call home, because america does not want to take care of their people.

Have you tried a compounding pharmacy? Last time I checked, one in South Carolina was able to make a "generic" Donnatal for a fraction of the cost at a regular pharmacy.

Pharm companies are all about the big bucks. They now have no competition so they can charge what they like. I took donnetal for years. Now I have been switched to something else for the same reasons as people have previously stated. I have had little relief.

Actually what happened according to my doctor.. was that the factory that made Donnatal was the factory that was shut down due to a mishap with the shape and size of their Digoxin pills. And because of that, Donnatal nor its generic form were available. Now that it is available again, the price has skyrocketed... and insurance companies don't want to cover it, they want people to take the less expensive alternatives for IBS like Bentyl or Levsin.

I, too, have used Donnatal for over 25 yr. no other drug comes close in efficacy. It speaks loudly of the culture of big business who make it virtually out of reach for us secondary to high scalpers prices.

Compounders cannot duplicate the formula, it is illegal. However, they can swap out phenobarbital for codeine or any other schedule I pain reliever. If you can get your MD to write the script. Problem is, with no documented evaluations on safety and efficacy, neither of my MDs would do so. It is against their standards of practice as we are not Guinea pigs. I totally get it, but was in bed all of thanksgiving holiday with acute IBS wearing Depends.

I just had my Donnatal Rx filled by Express Scripts. My bottle states the manufacturer is Concordia. Big problem is on my insurance, it's a tier 3 drug & a 3 month supply (270 tabs) cost over $2,100.00. Thank goodness we had met our insurance deductible for the year so it only cost $100.00.
That regular price was a few hundred dollars lower than the last time I got it filled.
I've taken it off & on since my teens & it's the only medicine that helps me - have tried quite a few others that either didn't help at all or caused nasty side effects that I couldn't deal with so I'm at their mercy :/

Thank you for your message. I totally agree with you, Donnatol is the only medication that helps me IBS at this point. My insurance would not cover it at all, so I am very lucky that my sister got the meds for me because her insurance did cover it, however, since Jan 1 and her new insurance, her insurance will not cover it and I am obviously upset. To think that I pay over $900 !!! monthly for my health insurance and it won't cover what I need is bizarre. I was told that I have to get a letter from my GI doctor and hope that my insurance (Carefirst) will honor his letter and allow me to get my prescription. At what cost, I don't know at this point. I have also used Paregoric (which is a liquid and was off the market for a number of years, but just went back on the market). So, my doctor prescribed the Paregoric for me with 4 refills. So, after having one bottle filled, I am now told that the pharmacist "cannot get" the other refills anywhere. I have no idea what is going on with that!! I am glad for you that you got the Donnatol you need at a decent price.

No, sorry dear, it isn't available in Canada at all. It is an 80 year old drug and my pharmacist claims that there is such little drugs in it that it has never been proved that it helps at all. Piss me off!!!! Let them lay on the couch and hang on to their guts with a heating pad and have no life at all!!!! He don't want me to take it. He wants me to take Humaira, which causes cancer and some organ failure. I have had Ulcerative Colitis since I was 19. I am 51 now. I guess I know what the hell I am talking about and Donnatal works!!! I went to his boss because my Rite Aid pharmacist thinks he knows it all. He can take his cancer causing drug and shove it up his A**. For 1 month supply they charge my insurance $2,770.00. I have to pay $65.00. I feel so guilty that I can get it and have a half decent life. Go to donnatal.com. There are numbers you can call. Don't give up!!! believe me I have to fight with my insurance Co. (Only for about 2 minutes). If anyone needs any help getting it {edited for privacy} I will help and fight with you!!! God Bless!

Hello all. I too have been lost without my donnatol. Here's what i do, hope it helps you all. Get your doc to prescribe the 2 main meds in the donnatol drug separately. I take phenobarbital 16.2 mg and hyoscyamine0.125 mg. Pharmacist told me it was worth a try and has been a Godsend to me. I was literally in tears when my ins decided not to cover at all and i just can't afford it.
