Does Metoprolol Er 100mg Ever Loose Its Effectiveness

Does this drug loose its effectiveness if it is split in half like 90 days before taking it? Also will taking tums (2 - 750 mg tablets) with this drug reduce its effectiveness?

This is a time released formulation of Metoprolol, so it needs to be taken whole, the tablets should not be cut or broken, because that could cause you to get too much of the medication, at once. If you have a tablet that's been cut or broken, you should discard it.

The FDA lists the typical side effects of this medication as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased urination and hypotension.

And yes, Tums will reduce it's efficacy, so if you need an antacid you should look for an alternative.

Hi Mom... I also take 100mg of Metoprolol ER. If you need something for your stomach, my doctor advised me to take Pepcid instead of Tums.. it works well.

Metoprolol Succinate extended release CAN be cut in half, unlike most extended release tablets. I have confirmed this with my girlfriend's cardiologist and two pharmacists. That's why the tablets are scored. They should, however, be broken or cut along the scoreline. They are not "layered", like most extended release medications, which is why they can be cut in half.
