Does Fentanyl Cause Long Term Brain Damage (Top voted first)
UpdatedHi.. It is my understanding that some opiates like H cause some changes in your brain over the long term and I was wondering if this was the case with fentanyl? It is a regularly prescribed medicine so I was hoping no. Anyone?

YES. My mother is 88, and has arthritis in her shoulders. Her doctor prescribed a Fentanyl patch, and the next day I got a call from the nursing home that Mom was 'lethargic' and they were wondering if I wanted her to be sent to the ER to be evaluated.
She has not been able to speak a full sentence since, can't follow with her eyes if she can even get them to open. Her eyes are usually turned up in her head, even when she is 'conscious'.
There is no doubt that it was fentanyl that caused this profound brain damage.
Hello, Browncow! How are you?
That is one of the huge differences that explains why some drugs are legal and some aren't. The benefits have to outweigh the possible risks and they actually have to have a therapeutic medical use.
And no, I've not found anything about Fentanyl causing brain damage. As listed by the FDA, the most common reported issues with long-term use are addiction, tolerance and overdose.
This is a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.
Is there anything else I can help with?
Re: Susan (# 2)
Your mom is too old to be on opiates. opiates in the elderly dont mix. i BET shes lethargic. i doubt the damage is permanent...but get her off any opiates. she shood come back around in a few days.
