Recently my pharmacy began giving me a new version of fluoxetine, which I have taken for MANY years with no problems.... however the blue fluoxetine gives me horrible heart burn. I use to take them at night before bed, but couldn't sleep, so decided to start taking them in the morning and still get the heartburn. I don't take them with any other meds. I tried an empty stomach, and after eating, but the results are still the same. I also get a bad headache (I think from the heartburn.) Has anyone figured out how to avoid this problem?

Have you tried taking some type of antacid when you take the Fluoxetine?

I checked interactions between the most common ones and Fluoxetine and didn't find any problems listed. The ones I ran it against were Omeprazole (Prilosec), Famotidine (Pepcid) and Tums, all of which are also available over the counter now.

Learn more Omeprazole details here.

Learn more Famotidine details here.

Learn more Tums details here.

There may be a different inactive ingredient in these ones that just doesn't agree with you and is causing your stomach to produce too much acid. An antacid is likely to be a good idea, to prevent an ulcer from occurring.

You should check all of this out with your doctor, before doing so, but if they don't see any problem with you using an antacid, then it may be worth a try.
