Does Miralax Raise Blood Pressure
UpdatedI've never had a blood pressure issue and since taking MiraLAX for a week for constipation my lood pressure was 166/104! Could it be the MiraLAX?
Ref: (MiraLAX / Polyethylene glycol 3350) MedlinePlus
"The effect of stimulant laxatives and polyethylene glycol-electrolyte lavage solution for colonoscopy preparation on serum electrolytes and hemodynamics": https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/11246353
However, I think you should consult with your doctor for an exam and further testing, because while it isn't listed a side effect or reaction, other users have reported experiencing this from MiraLAX and their blood pressure went back to normal when they stopped using it.
Did you have any other unusual symptoms?
No I haven't noticed anything. I stopped using the Miralax yesterday, increased my potassium and magnesium, drank lots of water, and cut out sodium. Today my Bp was 157/92..... I'm gonna keep a close check on it over te weekend as the Miralax leaves my system.
After being off of the miralax for some time now, how has your blood pressure been affected?
I also experienced the same side effect with Miralax. I do have high bp but controled very well by medicine. When taken the Mitalax my bp went up really high. Soon as I stopped it went back down. Sounds like a common side effect
I've absolutely linked Miralax with Hypertension. I had a BP of 280/130. By the time I was admitted to E.R. my BP med that I had taken had me at 230/110, deadly high. I had noticed I had taken my Miralax once a week, sometimes once every two when I had been taking it daily. I believe that's the issue. I took the Miralax and my BP shot up, it's 180/90 and climbing. If I survive this one. I'll attempt taking much lower dose daily again, if BP still shoots up then I'm done. Back to issues having a BM, Ex Lax, suppositories and Colace. I've have Colitis, take pain meds. Ladies watch the correlation of increased BP when taking Miralax. Does anyone else take Miralax as I do? I've got to try going back to daily, 1 Gram a day, instead of 5-10 once a week or biweekly. My script says 5-17 Gram dose, doc said find what works, I did but after years changed dosing habit, no doubt the Miralax caused the high BPs. Hope it can be solved.
I found this thread because I started taking miralax for a colonoscopy prep, ive taken 4 doses over 2 days as directed and have had head aches and now I feel like my pulse is throbbing and like ive climbed stairs hard possibley high bp, im gonna try to find a free diagnosis, this worries me.
My BP also went sky high after I started taking 2 doses a day everyday for several months. It was well over 200/120 and I was hospitalized for 2 days to get it down enough to go home and now I am on 4 different BP meds to keep it stable. I am in stage 4 kidney failure and I am terrified that miralax is killing my kidneys
It says on the bottle DO NOT USE if you have kidney disease
My gastroenterologist prescribed miralax, knowing full well that I have stage 4 kidney disease, because I can't have a bowel movement without it. I keep trying to tell him about the dangerously high blood pressure but he won't listen. I am 61 and female and 1 percent of the population has this side effect with 65 percent of that 1 percent being women 60 and over. Can anyone help me
as an otherwise healthy 54 year old- I just experienced High BP from miralax . I took a lot as prescribed for a coloscopy prep and felt jittery and mildly anxious for the next few days. I happened to have scheduled a routine doctor appt 2 days after and sure enough my BP was very high. It has never been high. I bought a home BP monitor and it stayed high for about 8 days. Of course I drank a gallon of miralax as prescribed (1/2 the recommended dose) the night before, but good thing I didn't drink all of it. I think more studies need to be done on miralax and B and Calcium/phosphorus. not doing that again.
I took miralax every day for about 2 weeks. After 1 week I woke up with my heart beating fast and was up most of the night. I continued taking it and wondered if miralax caused it and asked my doctor and the pharmacist who both said that it would not be the cause of such symptoms. A week later the same thing happened again only worse with s blood pressure at 180/100 which is very high for me especially since I take a mild blood pressure medication at night. I haven't used miralax now for a week and have not had another episode.
I have tried starting and stopping miralax 4 times now, Each time my blood pressure goes up and I get palpitations with many skipped beats. I was so concerned I saw my cardiologist. She assured me it was not a-fib but told me to stop the miralax. She said it's not listed as a side effect but that everyone is different. Well, I got so constipated I decided to give it one more try. Sure enough same symptoms so no more. I also have lots of cramping and watery diarrhea for 2 days so far this time. I took 17grams
I have high blood pressure but I have been taking Losartan and maintaining a good bp 120's/70's. I took miralax last night and today my bp is 150's/90's and sometimes higher. I have been drinking water trying to flush this crap out of my body. I will never take it again. Headaches and high bp and feeling sick is for the birds. For now on I will drink prune juice. All natural for me.
My BP has risen since trying Mirolax. So lm stopping it thank you
My blood was 157/102 after taking Miralax last night and starting realizing that it goes up every time I take it which is about once a week. Never again.
My doctors had me on Miralax for 3 years. The last 3 months I have had high blood pressure and it's getting higher as time goes on. Doubling my BP meds has not helped. Finally I found these posts. I have stopped the Miralax for one day now. I will report back in 8 days. I hope this works for me.
I will never take Miralax again. I am eating prunes every day and seems to help and do not have blood pressure problems.
I was in the hospital and very constipated and took Miralax for a couple of days and I do not know if it was a coincidence but my blood pressure spiked to 180/100, 3 days in a row. Very scary. Stopped Miralax and blood pressure dropped to normal. Who knows what it is in the stuff that is causing spikes.
I have been taking Miralax daily for over 3 months. I have always had Hypertension problems and take a low dose med which did correct it. But lately my BP spikes have gotten higher & my home readings won't go below 160/95? I did think Miralax had HBP as a side effect but after reading these comments, I'm stopping it today & flushing it out with lots of water. I will stick with natural laxatives like prunes. I will check back in a few days.
ABSOLUTELY!!!!! I didn't take Miralax, but a solition very similar and, 8 days later, my normal blood pressure is STILL dangerously high. I give this to my special needs daughter, 23 years old, and her BP is higher than it should be. The Pharm co. and/or doctors are keeping us in the dark about something very dangerous

My BP has been high 187/101 and usually runs 115/65. Been to heat Dr and primary care provider. Each time they changed my BP pill frequency with no positive results. Stopped Miralax and bingo, BP went down after a week!
Re: Medical Mess (# 5)
Yes made my BP go up . Didn’t finish taking it for my colonoscopy , which I cancelled.
Re: Tony (# 49)
They like to use this prep because it’s Gentle, but I can’t do it either. The volume of it makes me vomit it all up and then it doesn’t work. When I can try again they told me to ask for a specific prep they will note in my file (I don’t remember the name) I guess it’s the equivalent of a shot or two but it tastes really gross. I don’t really care how it tastes if it’s only two swallows, vomiting up all that MiraLAX and Gatorade tasted pretty gross and I didn’t even get to have the procedure so . . .
Re: John (# 42)
I just went through the same thing. l did the prep on Tuesday & Wednesday. I went to get the procedure and they sent me home. My BP went from 140/75 to 210/110. So I prepped for nothing. My BP is still high at 175/99 and I’m waiting for my cardiologist to call me back.
Re: John (# 42)
I did the same pre colonoscopy prep. Couldn’t figure out why I was getting a pounding headache and flushing. My BP is usually 118/60, but it went up to 165/90! Glad I found this forum, now I know it was the Miralax! Hoping it goes back down after the procedure tomorrow
Re: Verwon (# 1)
Raised mine as well. After I finished with a bm x 3 it went back to normal
Yes, this happens to my family member every time they take it. Feels like crap and bp goes up despite being well controlled on a couple of different meds! No doubt it's the Miralax. It needs a warning - there are enough comments here to confirm it is not a super rare side effect in women over 60!

A follow-up to this: My BP finally came down after 8 days, and with it the constipation came back. After getting badly bloated and plugged up again I took 1 Senokot in the evening.
2 hours later my BP went up 25 points and continued to be high all the next day (while the laxative worked). It topped out at 160/89. Finally the day after that (today) it came down again (so far).
I am newly on metoprolol, a beta blocker, and never had constipation issues until I was on it. Since I've now experienced a significant rise on 2 different laxatives of 2 different types (osmotic and stimulant) I am thinking now that it is some interaction with the beta blocker and the bowel signaling causing this and not the laxative itself.
5 years ago I used a PEG-based colonoscopy prep that I had no issues with. I wasn't on BP meds at the time nor a beta blocker.
I would be very interested in hearing if anyone else having this issue was also on a beta blocker and if so, which one.
Re: John (# 42)
Did your BP go back down? If so, how long did it take? Mine is still messed up!
This just happened to me. I have an aneurysm so must closely watch my BP and it has been around 110/70 for weeks. I took one packet of Miralax and 2 hours later it was 150/90! It was high for the next 48 hours (topped at 170/90 one morning, very scary!) and is finally coming down today. I will never take a PEG-3350 medication again. BP this high could rupture my aneurysm. I wish more doctors knew about the possibility of dangerously high BP from this substance.
