Doctors Willing To Prescribe Heavy Pain Medication In Colorado (Page 226)

I have a serious problem. My dr. had two patients start dr. shopping and has decided it is too big of a pain in his butt to continue prescribing, even though I have gotten MRIs and Xrays to prove my problems. I have over a half a dozen herniated discs in my low back, along with degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, scoliosis and arthritis in my facet joints. I am currently on5 30mg oxycodone a day for breakthrough and 60mg of methadone for my long lasting meds. I REALLY need a doctor in the Denver, CO area who will not judge me because of my age, thinking I'm just some drug seeker as I TRULY need my meds to function. I am even being placed on disability until I can get my back healed because if something doesn't change I will be in big time pain for the rest of my life. If ANYONE knows of a good doctor that prescribes strong meds willingly in the Denver area please let me know. I am in desperate need of help as I am going to be SCREWED if I cannot find a good doctor. SOMEONE please help me with a doctor!!!!!
I would ask about the murmur but methadone has FAR less side effects than morphine because morphine is one of the 3 alkaloids in the opium poppy. So it is straight out of the poppy, no work in labs or anything. If it is safe with your murmur my advice would be to try it as it is probably what works best for me for long acting.... But definitely make sure it's safe with your condition.
Rainbow you have a right to refuse any meds or treatment .At the same time the doctor or clinic can refuse to continue care .Their only trying to find a long acting med because taking perk or Vicodin or any of that crap long term with Tylenol is going to kill you .So following the new DEA protocol any pain person on long term meds must be on two 12 hr and no more than three break thru a day .I know your afraid but this place is your only hope .At least try it ,they know your history .If after two days it doesn't help than you tried than they will either try fentynol patches .But at least you look like your doing everything to improve your condition .I was scared to take OxyContin after everything I read and seen working with people at the ER .Im grateful I took a chance on it eight years ago .Methedone may work for your pain .Each of us are different .
Thanks tammy n sara I wil n im always honest with my dr I tel all I guess since im comforrble with my current pain med and it wks and I no im repeatin myself im just scare seems the more readin I do the more I worry but thanks again 4 helpin me
I was born with a murmur but as I grew it closed I guess but because of it I have mitral valve prolapse. But if you have a murmur I would ask many questions about the methadone to the doctor so he/she could answer better and maybe ease your fears. But all you need to do is at least try the med and if it doesn't work then you just let them know and it is changed. I hope everything goes good for you.
Rain-you SHOULD be telling and your doctor should be listening to all your fears and wants. How else will she know what you need?
You have every right to be comfortable with your pain management. That IS the goal, to help YOU.
Being clear and honest is always best. We have to advocate for ourselves. If you don't tell her, who will?
Don't be scared. Your doctor is there to help you. As long as you're not abusing, she's going to listen. Try not to worry so much <3
1 more question wld I be in the wrong if I ask my dr if I could stay on the pain meds that im on now.The more info I read about methadone the less I want 2 try it with havin a heart murmur n the allgeric reaction from the morphine im just SCARED
Wendy-thank you for the clarification. It has come up around other threads that we can be afraid to go to the hospital for help when in crisis, thinking we will be somehow held against our will and meds withheld.
In Colorado, the line between a hold and a request is pretty clear. Not so much in other states...
In AZ, my critically ill brother brother was being "held" for oxygen, delirium, etc. Long story...but they told his 20 something frightened children that he couldn't be moved or released. And they threatened to stop all pain meds if crossed...which he needed..
When I arrived, I moved him to a much better facility. A month later, he is untraeched, (i dont think thats a real word...:) talking and coming home soon.
Looking back, the nurses at the first facility said the goal was to allow him to die with dignity, not in an ambulance.
Decent enough goals, we just had different ones. And we got very lucky.
As a retired RN A 51/50 or 72 hour hold is only for people that are going to do harm to themselves or others .Anyother reason you can leave via AMA but insurance won't pick up bill .So whoever said the mental hold was right ,you cannot leave no matter who you are until a qualified psych D releases you .
Just a thought; punctuation online can change the tone of a post in ways that the writer didn't intend. Conversely, it could be the point. I know my ex-brother-in-law, was German and editing his resume was a bit of a tiff because of how the German language capitalizes nouns in general.

Since I can't ask privately, are you excited or upset? I ask because I honestly care. The use of one exclamation point is meant to be used to show a forceful, excited, or angry utterance. Since every sentence had one I want to make sure I'm getting your full meaning in your posts. :)
Thanks lady 4 all ur help n advice but I think im just goin 2 tell my dr since I reacted bad 2 tha morphine im nt gonna do tha methadone n what I was reading bout it. I hope my dr understands and wil continue seeing me I wil let you guys no wat happens
Sara, I understand what u r saying and we r saying the same thing in a different way! There r several different medical holds and they vary state to state by law! The bottom line of a medical hold is "if the person is a danger to himself or others", which is widely interpreted! Yes, u can typically sign yourself out AMA but if your medical condition is serious enough that u r not capable of making good judgements, such as lack of oxygen, stroking, head injuries, a ton of medical conditions, a hospital can still and will put you on medical hold! So u r splitting hairs, these medical issues are not psychiatric in nature but do compromise making good sound judgements and the hospital can hold u! I'm sorry if I wasn't clear in my explanation! Look up the law and there r several different holds, not just a 5250, most generally say "anyone who is a danger to himself or others"! This does not include just psychiatric issues, any medical issue that impairs good judgement can qualify and they can b as short as 24 or 48 hrs!
Also I'm not sure who wrote Rain about the Methadone but good for u! Each person is different and each have different reactions to medications but many discard methadone as a good medication for chronic pain! It can b a life saver! I've had clients that swear by it! My husband was on it and at first swore it did nothing, we all make judgements about what is or isn't going to work for us! Some swear only oxy's work or only MS Contin works for them, we all do it consciously or unconsciously! After reading about methadone and being educated about how it works, he gave it a try and it worked like magic! Unfortunately, like all meds, it has side effects and situations where it can't b used, he ended up with some heart issues and had to b taken off of it! So don't disregard trying any meds, give it a try, it maybe just the thing u need!
Sara -- I have to disagree with you on Methadone - The reason the FDA etc. is coming down on Methadone is regular MDs started prescribing it (due to low cost & low side effects) without using a Pain specialist. Methadone was (and still is) the only medication that allowed me to be titrated to higher quantities (started at 60mg day & was titrated up to 250mg day over 18 yrs( without feeling groggy. Unless allergic to Methadone I would recommend trying it if you have not and having someone who will increase it as needed to get your pain under control (level 5).
Janeygirl-no, that's incorrect. Doctors can ASK you to stay but you can still still sign out AMA for the reasons you list.
I'm talking about holding you against your will. That takes a psych consult.
No one can hold you in a hospital against your will for insurance reasons. Or pending surgery.
You can take any risk you want with your life if you are deemed sane..
Sara - When you say that a majority of the cost in prescriptions is the bottling, what do you mean? Generic vs brand? Just curious.
All drug companies are required to help people obtain their medications now. So if something is too expensive for whatever reason, if you find the manufacturer there is usually something on the internet to tell you how to qualify and what meds qualify. For instance, even with insurance suboxone is $70 for me, but the program that my pharmacy signed me up for cuts that down to $20 and it has stayed that price since Aug. of '13, with the understanding that I follow their timeline. I've never even come close to cutting it short or anything like that, I think it's 30 days no less.
Kuala, A 72 hour hold can b for other medical reasons than just psychological! Most relate it to psych reasons but there r a myriad of reasons for doc's to use this , insurance or lack there of, life threatening issues and such! It is a 72 hour hold but u would know if it's for a psych hold! It can b as simple as trying to find the appropriate place for someone to get the appropriate treatment!
Rain-Not really. You have a right to refuse a med with good reason.
If she wants you to try it, you may not be able to go back to what you had before.
Methadone creates SEVERE tiredness. If you're the driver of the family, that's pretty scary.
Tell her you're too afraid of the side effects. Print them out so you show that you've thought about it..
I've been told that I'm unreasonable, an arm twister, and uneducated in the ways of the body and brain when it comes to pain for pushing back when I would rather not even try a particular med. See I had gastric bypass 10 years ago and part of the surgery is to remove a portion of small G.I for a couple reasons. Anyway extended release is of zero use to me especially because I had several centimeters more than the average person removed.
I would prefer 2-3 pills a day as opposed to 30+ between pain meds and other issues. However, I need relief. Eventually, I was kicked out as if I impregnated an intern. I didn't even over take or early fill...nothing in the contract. I believe that if you keep a pain diary tracking time, pain level before dose, and 45-60 minutes after, sleep cycle, food intake and all side effects with details of what you had to do to address the negative (other meds, Dr appt, missed work or care taker missed work to take care of you, etc) in addition to meeting your pain needs. I'd also note the positive. My Dr does the 1-10 pain scale with 5 being with pain, but you can still leave the house for an errand or the like. BTW this was NOT Kaiser.
Kaiser is taking the non narcotic approach to pain control .A lot of doctors their are not allowed to write some meds.If you don't try it they could look at you as only wanting narcotics and send you away .It has happen to a few of my friends that were at my first doctor and switch to kaiser .
Lizzie I just started on Topamax about a month ago. I had no idea that there was a legal suit :( it has been great for my chronic migraines from the herniated discs in my neck.
I'm fortunate because my primary Dr. will prescribe any kind of pain pill but they all are short term. She's never had me on anything long term, consequently I take pain pills every 4 hours.
So can my dr discharge me or stop givin me pain meds if I dnt do tha methadone
