Yes, from what I've learned that is basically correct.
General practitioners won't be able to prescribe such medications, except in emergency cases after recent injury or surgery.
Learn more pain management details here.
If someone suffers from a condition that causes long-term chronic pain, they have to see a pain management specialist for treatment to continue having such medications prescribed.
A lot of it has to do with the abuse of the medications by many people, the fact that many doctors aren't specially trained to treat people that in chronic pain and the fact that many people who could pursue other avenues to solve their pain issue will not do so.
Are there any other questions or comments?
Do not get on tramadol!!!!! It is the worst thing you can do. This medication really makes people into addicts. Myself included. I never had problems with meds., till I got breast cancer and switching meds back n forth. Tramadol does make you feel good but when you run out it gets very scary.
I was on vicodin until a week ago. I'm in the midwest. My new dr put me on norco because they took vicodin off the market. It all has to do with the amount of acetamine. The norco has less then vicodin. Are you sure they are just not lowering the amount of acetamine in it? Don't panic.I am very lucky to have found my new dr. which is not from pain management. The only thing they were managing was there pocketbook. They wouldn't even put a refill on anything, that way I had to pay the office call every month. I have a great md now. There are several pain meds. I also take fentenal pain patches.I am allergic to most everything that could really get me out of pain in a hurry so they are really trying to work with my conditions. I also qualify fo medical pot. Think that would be down the road sometime or maybe never. Can you check online for CA. to make sure they have banned it out there or is it just your dr.I just did a quick check on ca. banning norco and I can find nothing about it. I think it's your dr. check around. Good Luck!
Holly-youve got some errors there.
Vicodin 5/500 is still around, but Norco 5/325 has less acetaminophen, same amount of pain reliever. Less acetaminophen means a healthier liver for long term med users, so that's good for us!
Norco also comes in double strength 10/325.
If you stay with the Watson generic, you might feel as you did on the old vicodin.
Many pharmacies are giving the cheaper malinkrodt generic and some don't feel the same level of pain relief.
Or you can ask your doc to add an Advil on bad days or add gabapentin. Gaba works really well for nerve pain.
Tramadol is very dangerous as prolonged use lowers the threshold barriers to grand mal seizures. Took about 3 years due to many surgeries on bones. No one warned me of possible problems. Told it was a safe and mild pain reliever. With no family history had massive seizure traced to this med.
I have my doctors prescription for Norco 10-325 which, after trying many others, is the one that has worked...for more than 8 years. I'm about to run out and my regular pharmacy is out and other Sun City Ca pharmacies say none available also. What alternatives do I have? Nothing else has ever given me relief.
I have just done some research about having a family Dr prescribe schedule drugs and I placed 2015 on the title. Finally I have a solid piece of up to date information.
There is a complete explanation about this. Schedule III they can send a fax or e file. Schedule II they can prescribe a one month supply and they can write two more and post date them but the patient must come back for an office visit. The limit for my insurance is six Norco 10 a day. I am taking 3 a day. I would see my Dr once a month any way to ensure he feels right about prescribing. There is no talk about DEA at all. They are looking at people who are getting large numbers of controlled substances. If a doctor says he cannot prescribe he is not informed or he does not want to prescribe. I understand how they feel.
Of course a doctor can say no if he wants to. I have read many posts that are not correct. If you have a long term relationship with your doctor and he knows your history, chances are he will prescribe. I was given erroneous info here and saw a pain management doctor. I am NOT going to be subjected to a U/A. That is in my opinion treating everyone like an addict. Pain management doctors, many do not write prescriptions. They want to make money on PT and epidurals etc.
Vervon,
Your information is not correct. I have read the new laws. They say Schedule II Norco can be filled with a WRITTEN prescription. Your Dr can give you three scripts dated to be filled for the next two months and then you must see the doctor to get a new script.
My insurance allows six per day but I take three. A Dr can refuse but if he says he cannot fill, he is not being honest or he does not understand the new law. I have it printed up. It is legal in 2015 for your family doctor to prescribe. I also called my insurance and they agreed with me about the new law.
Tramadol is a ridiculously horrible medication and should be off the market in my opinion. First of all mileage varies, in other words for some (like me) it provides absolutely no pain relief even in high doses although for some like my wife it works whereas a straight opioid medication like Norco or Percocet tends to provide relief for almost all patients. From what I understand Tramadol is sort of a synthetic opiate benzodiazepine derivative that acts on nine different chemicals in the brain to provide analgesic pain relief. This drug can be very dangerous especially when dependence occurs and medication is abruptly stopped as seizures and convulsions may occur (the benzo aspect of it). When you abruptly stop Norco or alike withdrawal does occur although it is not dangerous, extremely unpleasant to say the least, but not dangerous ie no seizures or convulsions. My wife took Tramadol long term and it resulted in a serious personality change in her that almost resulted in a divorce! The ridiculous part is doctors love to prescribe this instead of real painkillers like the aforementioned Norco, Percocet, etc when in fact Tramadol is more dangerous. Yes the abuse potential for those is high but all thins considered I believe they are a much safer alternative. My advice: stay away from Tramadol.
I have done extensive research and I can tell you it is NOT true. My own doctor has said he can prescribe any medication he wants to as long as there is a need for it.
Many doctors fear they will get in trouble for writing pain medication. I saw a new pain management doctor who was very nice and was willing to prescribe. However I am not comfortable doing a UA and having my pills counted. I always have some left but to me it is as though I am treated like a drug addict which I am not. It is not the PM doctors' fault. they must do this as a PM doctor.
I saw my PCP and he was willing to write my prescription. I see him once a month.
I looked at the new laws in regard to pain management doctors and primary care doctors and I researched pharmacists and what they can and cannot do. I was tired of reading the false information here.
