I live in Spain and after a recent reoccurance of intermittent arrythmia, I have been prescribed apocard to regulate the heartbeat abd sintron in case of blood clotting. I have been taking these for over six months now and have had no reoccurance of the arrythmia since December. Do I really need to continue taking these medicines for ever as has been indicated by the Spanish doctors. I am only 57 participate regularly in sport and consider myself healthy. I don't like taking drugs and would rather not but it seems that now I am in the system there is no escape!

Hi, Pete!

I understand your concern, but really, regardless of what country you live in, unless they are holding you somewhere and forcefully injecting you with medications, there is no way that any system can make you take anything.

However, if you do decide to stop taking them after having done so for several months, there is some important information that you need to know for your own safety.

Sintron is an anticoagulant, so suddenly stooping it could have the opposite effect, it may cause dangerous blood clots that could put your life in danger.

Learn more Acenocoumarol details here.

And the same pretty much applies to the Apocard, a sudden withdrawal could cause you to develop a severely elevated heart rate.

Learn more Flecainide details here.

Thus, just suddenly stopping can be dangerous and isn't a good idea.

If it was just one brief occurrence, I have to question what made them put you on the medications to begin with. Usually, one random instance isn't treated, unless some underlying condition is found that makes it likely that it will happen again. I suppose some doctors are different and the policy may be different in Spain, I've never been there to know…

But I really think you should try to establish a regular relationship with a good doctor that you feel comfortable with and trust, so you can have some more testing done and have this looked into.

Are there any other questions or concerns?
