Disappearance Of 12mg Chlor-trimeton.... Again
(Newest replies first)

Question! Where can I find Chlor-Trimeton 12hr 12mg allergy pills? (near San Diego, CA) It seems that whenever a new allergy medicine comes on the market (Claritin, Zyrtec), CT disappears for a year or so. Available in Canada as Chlor-Tripolon but only for a short while as everyone in the US starts buying it on-line when CT disappears. This time, I haven't noticed any new product roll-out. Question 2- WHY does it disappear? I've been taking it regularly for over 50 years and only recently (last few years) has it been doing this disappearing act.
The active ingredient is chlorpheniramine maleate 12mg, just look for the generic OTC with that same ingredient.
This reminds me of when "Tylenol Migraine" was not available.
People were paying crazy prices online for it, and it was just acetaminophen and caffeine, easily bought separately.
Same with OTC sleeping pills, they are just Benadryl, which you can get a huge generic bottle of for much cheaper.
Re: JJ (# 76)
I just looked at Amazon. They appear to have it but it's pricey. If you don't mind taking it every 4 hours there are many suppliers of 4 mg at much lower price. Note that generic chlorpheniramine maleate is exactly the same drug as in Chlor-phen 12.
Re: Lori Pinkleton (# 9)
Is Chlorophen-12 still available? Does your company still manufacture/sell it? It's the only allergy product that has worked for years. I ordered from the Chlorophen-12 website but it still hasn't shipped (since 4/24) so is there another site/location to purchase it?
Thank you so much
Re: Jim (# 56)
You're probably just very swayed by marketing/placebo effect as they are basically the same thing. If someone gave you chlorpheniramine without the box, you'd probably do fine on it.
Re: Justine the Just (# 58)
They are the only ones selling it in the US so of course they're going to charge a premium for it. That's business.
Re: Shea (# 62)
They are essentially the same drug.

Re: Phil D (# 66)
The person was asking about the 12 hour extended release version, not the 4 hour version.
Re: Phil D (# 70)
The Chlorphen-12 website took my order today for 100 tablet bottles. April 7, 2022
It's available again on Amazon. I bought 2 bottles of 60 in April.
Amazon has it in stock again as of a few weeks ago. Brand name Chlorphen-12. {aff link added}
Just now found it available on Amazon! Hallelujah.
I sent an email to the manufacturer of Chlorphen-12, KVK Tech in Newtown PA, several weeks ago -- no reply.
Re: Shea (# 62)
That Bayer salesman was either ignorant or purposely misleading. I have been using Chlor-trimeton since about 1955 when it was still a prescription drug. Chlor-trimeton was the brand name. The generic name, in other words the drug's chemical name, always has been chlorpheniramine maleate.

Re: Liba (# 64)
I have purchase Chlor-tripolon 4mg for years in Canada now I have been told when ask at the drug store that they have not received product its on back order and on line it says the product has been cancelled I have used it for years for food allergies. and anything that has too much sulfites in it that can cause me breakout in a rash I keep it in my purse with me at all times. I guess us as consumers are now screwed to be able to purchase what works best for us.
Re: Debra (# 1)
Because It works, is my take on it!
Before 12 hr, there was 24 hr. With that one it took only one pill to stop the allergy/cold when taken at the first onset and I was free of suffering for the whole season! It worked like that for many other, that’s how I found out about it.The soon the pharmacists learned, it disappeared, only 12, 6, and now 4 is nowhere to find. None of these as good as the 24 or 12, perhaps. The mg got changed down too.
So see, where is money in that for the Big Pharma?
Ps: all colds are a family of corona viruses
Re: Justine the Just (# 58)
Your so right it's all about profit $, the insurance companies & pharmicutcal companies are running this country and are cornering the market. That is why Aren't Insurance & CVS have merged.
Re: RobinP211 (# 57)
CHLORPHENIRAMINE MALEATE is not the same as Chlor-Trimeton. In fact, it has nothing to do with Chlor-Trimeton. At least that is what a Bayer representative told me when I was investigating the disappearance of the medication. Bayer discontinued it as of 2015 and has not replaced the medication. The rep really did not say why, but IMHO it is probably because they were not making any money off the drug being it was a first generation drug. I am totally disappointed to find this out. It has left me hunting for a new replacement. Go to the Bayer website. They list the products they make and you can call a rep for each product. Was an eye-opener for me.
Re: Robert (# 60)
I have been looking for Chlor-Trimeton too. I just got off the phone with a Bayer representative and he told me that it was discontinued as of 2015. Very disappointing. The other brand called CHLORPHENIRAMINE MALEATE has nothing to do with Bayer and is not a replacement for Chlor-Trimeton according to the Bayer representative. I do not get allergies every year but this has been my goto medication when I do suffer. I didn't realize I used up my last stash of it last year. I really hope I can find another medication that will do the trick for me. I guess Bayer was not making enough money from Chlor-Trimeton.
Re: Lori (# 4)
Thank you so much for your info.. I was told today my pharmacy could no longer get Chlorphen 12 & it was off the market. Had to settle with Loratadine. Was not happy because I use Chlorphen 12 for some good sleep as I don't sleep well at times.
I've been buying Chlorphen-12 from Amazon and it is still available, but the price has gone up $14.00 since December and is now $49.99 for 120 pills. It's also available on eBay, but the price is even higher. I'm wondering if the supply is just getting scarce or if it is about to be discontinued. I agree with many others that none of the newer allergy pills - zyrtec, allegra, claritin, xyzal - control my cough at all. Only chlorpheniramine does the trick. {affiliate link added}
