Dilemma With 2 Narcotic Scripts From 2 Doctors (Page 5)

Updated

Hi all. I have intractable pelvic RSD, peripheral neuropathy, lumbar facet spondylosis. I live in California and am about to have to change insurances at the end of this month. The new insurance has ridiculously high Rx prices. I go to a PM for all my pain meds, but my primary dr has in the past managed them for me. My question is if anyone knows if I get an Rx for the 60mg Oxycontin twice a day like usual from my PM and then my primary to write a script for 40mg 3 times a day and then I can go to 2 totally different pharmacies and fill one with my insurance and the other at another pharmacy and pay with cash, will that flag the DEA and cause my PM to get a notification of "Doctor shopping"? I am just trying to have enough meds to get me through an extra month until my husbands new job let's us get medical coverage?

I had to do this one other time a year ago when the same thing happened with me loosing my job because I could no longer work and I wasn't married yet to get my husbands insurance. The first 2 months I had no problem, but the third and LAST month I was needing to do it to get me enough meds to last me the 3 month waiting period, my husband forgot and filled both scripts under the same insurance but just at 2 different pharmacies instead of paying cash at the second one. My pain doctor found this out and thank God I was able to explain my way out of it and he didn't discharge me as a patient, but now in this situation again, I'm afraid to try it one last time til we are settled with yet another health insurance. I would really appreciate anyone's advise or experience they could share regarding my situation. I truly am not a doctor shopper, I am just afraid to run out of meds and be in massive pain and / or risk getting into trouble.

It doesn't matter which pharmacy you take it to, they will look it up in the Prescription Monitoring Praogram database for your state. They will see when you got your last rx filled, how many it was for, who wrote it and how long it was suppose to last along with other info. If it is within a day or 2 of your being out, the pharmacy may fill it or they may make you come back on the day the 120 will run out.

Seriously? Do you know how ridiculous and desperate you come off as? It floors me that you are on an open forum, LITERALLY BEGGING people to find out where you can get your next fix! Why don't you try exercising, going for a walk, meditation etc etc? There are better and much more effective ways health wise to manage your pain then stuffing your face with Narcotics. Smdh......

Whst the he** r u doing on these threads unless ur in the same position, on the same med! Get a life!

Now, for double dipping on a script.....ur scenario doesnt make sense as to how u ended up w 2 scripts for 1.....2, do u realize what ur contemplating is one of the causes as to y legit, rule abiding, pm patients are suffering now, in dire need of n searching for a new pm med to get our pain under control bcause the strong meds we once had access to, r being removed from the market! What u want to do is why the pharmacies, Dr's, DEA , FDA, n any other combination of the alphabet related to meds is making it sooo hard if not impossible to have access to needed meds! STOP! Not only r u risking losing UR monthly meds all together, but ur making it harder for the next person walking in after u for the same med!

The next post under my name after this isvwaiting for approval. ...the not make sense part is referring to someone who posted a reply trying to fill 2 scripts in the same month....but the rest is for anyone who's doing this! But to the original post asking the question. ....u need to ask ur Dr on the last visit to prescribe u enough to get u through the grace period

BL..... u just made the same point I was making.....maybe I referred to the database by a diff name, but the same steps the pharmacist would do to ensure no double dipping is the same as ur answer

missy, it doesn't matter if you pay for it or go to a different pharmacy, the pharmacist and all yours drs have access to the info about the rxs you had filled. If you signed a pain contract, you have broken it and will find it difficult if not impossible to find another dr who will manage your pain. As far as a pharmacist filling the er rx, it is up to the pharmacist. If the first rx you were given was suppose to last 10 days and it is less than that when you try and get the er rx filled, you may have a problem.

Hi. I'm sorry you too are in pain. What you described defines doctor shopping so don't get cut off. I've been where you are right in LA and done just that. It always catches up to you. I don't want to see you suffer. Good luck.

thanks for your concern. & I know it was a dumb thing to do for the few months that I did it. I just hope this doctor doesn't tell my other doctor and I don't get cut off from both. he cut me off point blank. I pray to God. I just don't know if patient / doctor confidentiality comes into play here

regg, your drs don't have to tell each other. All they have to do is look you up in your states Prescription Monitoring Program, all the rxs you've gotten filled along with who the drs were and other info is there.

Hey BL, I understand that but normally they won't look you up unless they have a reason. I was just wondering if this doctor can legally tell the other one? I understand they can get the information if they look it up, but normally they Won't unless they're suspicious of something. can they legally tell the other doctor? I guess there might be ways around it and let him know... I don't know. I just don't want to get cut off from my primary doctor

Greetings BL and Regg. I hope this reply finds you both well. Now that the monitoring program are up, I am praying no doctor decides to place a call. Your word should be enough. I take strong meds including fentanyl 75Macy's and oxycodone 10-325 for cancer related pain. I make sure I fill only when it is time. This can be hard at times. I also take Lyrica. 27 meds in total which have improved my life a great deal. Being stuck sick in bed is no way to go so I will pray the worry is all for not. Please take care of youourselves. God Bless. Lastly, if you can, stay away from former Watson now Actavais products as the fillers make lots sick.

Hi Lynn dear. To be honest this sounds like a test from your doctor. Unless he intended for you to have two scripts, way fax and write unless he knows unless it's a five day supply, hydrocodone needs to be written for over five days in most states. I'm worried for you and pray it is nothing at all. Best.

regg, some states require a dr to look up a patient in their PMP before rxing pain meds. PMP is the best way for drs to keep track of patients and what other drs rx them. When you fill out the forms when you become a new patient, you sign a form giving that dr permission to treat you and that includes discussing your heath with other providers. It is one of those forms that you have to sign, but you don't pay much if any attention to. Your insurance company can also discuss you and your treatment with your drs.

Thanks bl,the doctor that found out I have been going to for about two years and the new doctor I have only been going to for about 4 months. the doctor I've been going to for 2 years just now found out, my question is will he tell The other doctor?I know they have a prescription program where they can check what prescription you have filled.... My question is will a doctor go out of his way to tell another doctor?

regg, it really depends on the dr. Unless there is a problem, they really have no reason to communicate. Drs have countless patients. It is up to each dr to keep up with the meds their patient are prescribed and by what drs.
