Dilaudid Brand Vs Hydromorphone Generic

I have a Medtronic's pain pump. When brand name Dilaudid is being used I do just fine. When the Dr. refills and puts generic Hydromorphone (without changing the dosage), within hours I'm stumbling & losing my balance & very light headed. Dr, says there is no difference they are made the same. If they are the same then why do I have bad results without knowing that he put the generic in? I can't stand & close my eyes without hanging on to something or I will fall in 2 or 3 seconds.

Yes, under the Hatch-Waxman Act of 1984, generics are allowed to differ from the name brand in the amount of the active ingredient by as much as plus or minus 20%.

Give the symptoms you've described, which can be side effects of this medication, it's possible that the generic is slightly stronger than the name brand that you're used to.

Does it alleviate your pain?

Hi I have the same problem, I have been told that it is the fillers, I will not let them put generic Dilaudid in my pump because it doesn't take care of my pain & I couldn't close my eyes without hanging on to something. If you are going to a pain clinic go to the supervisor or CEO & tell them what going on & that you do fine with brand name Dilaudid, my doctor told me it was all in my head that their was no difference, I don't know why they are so hard headed about it. I went to his supervisor & the doc called me with in minutes, are you trying to get me fired? I said are you trying to kill me? Now on Jan 23/17 he told me that they don't make brand name anymore. Chronic pain is paralyzing my body and in BC Canada I can no longer obtain this med from my family physician due to Canada's Health Care restrictions of opioids to patients suffering from cancer only. "Please help"?

Sonny, you can still get Dilaudid or other opioids in BC. They suggested that it is better for cancer patients. However, they also stated that if other patients do bad with tapering after one month, then the tapering should be abandoned. You can go online and read the report for yourself. Go to the BC College of physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia. There is also a Canadian site, which BC gets there guidelines from. And the National Pain Centre. Which has put out the Draft form "The Canadian Guideline for Safe and Effective Use of Opioids for Chronic Non-Cancer Pain."
Doctor Andrea Furlan of the Canadian College said" opioids are effective, and people with pain, have the right to be treated with them"

Hi Sonny, i also live in canada. What's happenng is our wonderfull goverment is puttng heavy stress on doctors not to prescribe as if the doctors get flagged they face serious $$ issues, forced to lawyer up and face an investigation. You do have several options, i am in the same situation as you. I have serious back issues and need my meds and i get them. I feel you my friend. Are u in vancouver or far from the city? Have u tried pain clinics? Problem with B.C. is because of all the negative attention its getting, they think people want these to feel high. Just really a retarded weird Trudeau, let's legalize marijuana but let's remove pain killers from people who really need it.

Hi Gwen, the problem is this is turning into a scare tactic. A recent Ontario doctor is under investigation by the college of medicine, the doc is forced to lawyer up when this happens, out of his pocket. This is only in extreme cases - in this case the doctor had 84 patients under a high dosage, but none the less a good scare tactic, as now only 1 in 4 doctors in Canada will prescribe opioids and only after trying other options. There are some amazing pain specialists who do not care about the government, this btw is only a guide for doctors. I have a family clinic where all 3 doctors prescribe opioids and plus i have a pain clinic. Even when i overtake my meds, i get a 30 day dosage at a time, but i always turn up 4-5-6 days before and doctors still prescribe as they understand what pain is. All depends on the doctor. If a doctor tells me "its all in my head", i've had actually one tell me to try smarties chocolates and imagine to myself that they are opioids and they will do just the same.

It’s a shame that drs are ignorant to facts of the pharmacology between brand & generic, pharmacists are also ignorant to this fact. One phone call to the FDA, speak to a pharmacist at the FDA and LEARN. We chronic pain patients need to petition the federal government regarding FDA approval of ineffective garbage generic drugs. It will literally take an ACT OF CONGRESS to put a stop to this insanity of over governing of Physicians and Pharmacist, who prescribe and fulfill strong, long acting and breakthrough opioid pain medication. The MME morphine equivalent conversion needs to be thrown out. It is ridiculous and it’s not a one-size-fits-all. I see countless reviews from chronic pain suffers who rarely get their pain under control to have any quality of life whatsoever only just enough to maybe get through two hours at a time at maximum maybe 6 to 7 hours out of a 24 hour period and I am one of those patients. Another problem is if you move from one location to another and have to start all over trying to seek pain medication and the doctors refused to look at imaging lab results diagnosis from several specialists that shall be on the shadow of a doubt, destruction and numerous systems of the body muscular skeletal neurological just to name a couple, as you’re sitting there in front of them in a wheelchair crippled up and these indoctrinated young doctors are literally taught to believe everyone has “ drug seeking behavior” which is defamation of character and liable under the circumstances, especially when a person has proof in hand that these ignorant doctors wouldn’t be able to understand if they like their eyes on it to start with. I’m so frustrated with the medical industrial complex, which frankly and factually my personal physical condition is a direct result of the effects from pharmaceutical and the vaccine industry. But now that I’m in this condition as a continue trying to get some help in the new area that I’m in that I’ve been for a year and a half. I have gone through living hell, inhumane pain suffering, I have zero quality of life needing several joint replacements of which I’m evidently not a candidate above depending on which specialist of orthopedic surgeons that I go to, and or Brain-Spine surgeons who do not agree on whether or not, I am even a candidate to go into surgery therefore, I continue suffering. I’m to the point I’m going to find out who to contact in order to position which ever governing entity if I have to go before a congressional hearing in regards to this issue, I will be more than happy to for all of the millions of chronic pain suffers across this country who are dealing with the same problem as I am and all of the medical doctors pain doctors whom ever need to be educated learn some compassion and start properly and accurately providing Long Term and Breakthrough medication so that we critically and chronically pain suffers can get some kind of relief enough to have a bit of quality of life if it’s only 8 to 10 hours out of a 24 hour period and then we’ll continue suffering the other 14 as most of us suffer around the clock as it is anyways. The pain alone is exhausting the fatigue that chronic pain suffers deal with as we sleep 15 to 20 minutes out of time maybe three 3 1/2 hours any given night is exhausting but if I don’t do something or someone doesn’t band together to change the laws governing this nefarious pharmaceutical industry in the over governing of the Strong pain meds that the DEA sit behind desk, making decisions of which they have zero medical education has got to stop. I understand there’s a lot of people out there. Who do not need these medicine medicines that have caused us. Chronic pain suffers a lot of problems. Yes those people need to be dealt with and if you’re one of them, please Stop Because you are part of the problem and causing us chronic pain suffers agony grow up get help and stop causing problems for us to get the medication’s that we need please. I don’t really know how to start a form for people who would be willing to ban together to advocate the federal government for everything that I’ve spoken of, and if it possible that we be invited to speak in front of Congress, who legislates these issues, but we’ve really gotta make a change

Call the FDA, speak to a PHARMACIST; you’ll learn that the FDA allows generic drugs to be 20% LESS EFFECTIVE plus the inactive ingredients can change the absorption, metabolic rate of each patient.

What are you talking about thar you say are “ lies all lies”, please elaborate. Are you trying to say that patients who have a difficult time getting their pain treated are the ones lying or are you referring to the doctors who are the liars saying they cannot prescribe such and such medicines or whatever please elaborate I would love to hear your answer..
