My daughter has just been given this prescription:

DILAUDID – 8 MG
Take 3 Tabs PO TID for PRN 30Days
Qty:270
Repeats:0

What does it mean?

The PO means per oral route, so that means to swallow them and the TID actually means three times in a day.

Twice in a day would be BID.


This is Dialudid, which is a very potent narcotic, so being told she can take 3 of them at once is very unusual and if she isn't tolerant to narcotics, they could make her ill, so she might not want to start with 3.

Oh and just to add a further note on part that I missed, the PRN means she's to take them on an as needed basis, so this isn't a prescription that she has to take all the time, just when she has pain and needs relief.

My mistake, it actually reads:

Take 2 Tabs PO TID for PRN 30Days

Would she be better off being prescribed Roxicodone instead? She was originally taking Oxycontin 80mg. Is Roxicodone even available in Canada?
