Difference Between Intravenous Prednisone And Tablets.

I recently half a CT angiogram to map out my arteries for a Prostate Artery Embolisation. Because I am allergic to contrast dye the radioligist prescribed 5o mg of prednisone the night before and 1 hour before the procedure. It was in tablet form. The side effects of the prednisone were awful ....severe stomach pain, nausea, constant gnawing in stomach, headaches and weight gain. Its over four weeks now and symptoms have lessened but still there. All from only two 50 mg doses.
I discussed this with the radioligist and told him that I didn't want to proceed with the Prostate Embolisation because of the prednisone. He said they would use intravenous prednisone and this would prevent any stomach issues.
Can anyone here back this up? Has anyone here had intravenous prednisone and had stomach issues?

Hello, Peter! How are you? I'm sorry about what you went through, that's terrible.

Yes, that is correct, giving it via IV would bypass your stomach and GI tract, so it would avoid those side effects. However, it may still cause others, such as weight gain, headache, nervousness and insomnia, as listed by the FDA.

If you're really concerned, then you should feel free to consult another doctor and get a second opinion. Doctors are quite used to people doing that.

If I proceed with the Embolisation I would only need the pred during the procedure itself...1-2hrs.
