Did My Generic Adderall Cause Me To Test False Positive For Methamphetamine? (Page 3)

Updated

I take d-amphetamine salt combos 20mg twice daily, and I recently had a hair drug test for pre-employment purposes. I tested positive for methamphetamine at a level of 570ng/mg, but I have never touched meth! They already did the GC/MS, and are now doing an isomer test, but they say that my adderall could NOT have cause a positive meth result! I've seen in other responses that this is possible, however I can't find any documentation to prove this. I've read over the Adderall and methamphetamine information profiles on this site, but still don't have the proof I need. Does anyone know where I can find this documentation? Please help!

I second this response, I'm a RN and former Navy Medic who suffered a TBI during thee war. I've been taking Adderall XR for about 7yrs now.

I was assigned a new PC and he did his initial tox screen, got a letter a few days later saying I'd tested positive for Methamphetamine, and he could help me in my recovery etc.... I blew his phone up he wouldn't return my calls, I needed this headed off ASAP because if it makes it into my record it would adversely affect my future medical treatments and my career. 2 weeks went by and nothing was able to get an emergency type appointment w/ him.

Don't do drugs, drink, smoke etc... So I did my homework prior to going to my PC and found that methamphetamine breaks down into amphetamine and a lab should be able to do an additional test to determine between the 2, here's a blurb below:

"Methamphetamine actually breaks down and metabolizes into amphetamine. There are many other drugs in methamphetamine and a wide range of chemicals that can make this drug extremely potent and dangerous to use. Because of the way that methamphetamine breaks down into amphetamine, drug tests which show a presence of amphetamine are often considered a positive indication of methamphetamine use."

Now when I finally got to my PC he came in the office saying he was surprised I wasn't screaming etc etc. I told him that wouldn't get me anywhere but I think I knew where things went wrong lab wise, he stopped me, said he called the lab and they verified the Adderall. It's more a procedural issue most places see the amphetamine and they just stop there vs doing the extra step, I guess because those having it in their system are more likely to be taking methamphetamine vs having an RX for amphetamine?? I tried for answers as to why this wasn't automatically done in labs and was stone walled.

Generally, we've found that ADDERALL 30mg IR - SANDOZ (generic) - tests positive for meth. If that's the Adderall a pt is taking, the issue quietly disappears.

I am in the same situation. Have you found any information to clear you? I can't even get anyone to test for the isomer ratio! I need help!

In conclusion from my original post, I really want doctors and labs to stand up and take notice. (I realize that most people will try to say they are the victims of a false positive, but I am speaking for those of us who are are honest, have integrity, and a spotless medical record). Now, at the time I tested positive for methamphetamine, I was being tested at 2 different Dr's offices every month for the past 4 years, so how STUPID would I have been to start using after all this time. Also, I had just had a pain pump implanted by the same Dr that dropped me 2 weeks later. This Dr refused to talk to me, and his staff said to me, "methamphetamine is methamphetamine", after they had just handed me the lab report, (BTW, that took me a month to get out of them) that absolutely refuted that ignorant (ignorant is not stupid, it's simply un-knowing) statement. It stated, "The positive results could be EITHER an illicit drug OR certain OTC nasal sprays". I had been using an OTC spray for years, and I used it just before them giving me a saliva test. I think common sense tells us that the spray running down the back of the throat would be all over that saliva test strip. I went thru almost a year of HELL trying to find a pain management Dr that would accept me. They turned me down due to either my positive test or they wouldn't manage a pain pump implanted by another Dr. Basically I was BLACKLISTED. As an aside, they also failed to advise me that the medicine (morphine sulfate) in my pain pump MUST be drained and refilled at least every 6 months. I went almost a year and my pump was within DAYS of going dry!! Plus, what was in it was very unstable and dangerous to my system, and could have caused severe withdrawal symptoms.

DOCTORS, PLEASE, PLEASE!! Realize that you are not perfect, but that patient is placing their life in your hands, and you need to be SURE that you are doing what is best for THEM. If a patient tests positive for a non-prescribed drug or an illicit drug for the first time, give them the respect you expect to be afforded to you, and give them the chance to at least explain the test, take another test, etc. I think it has been shown, at least in an anecdotal sense, that no lab test for drugs is considered 100% infallible. My lab report, previously mentioned, proves this.

Patients: If you are completely innocent, push your Dr for a second chance, perhaps volunteering to be tested randomly as many times a month as is necessary. Or volunteer for a more accurate test such as a hair follicle test, at your expense. (that's better than being dropped and being blacklisted in the medical community.)

I worked for a very large law enf. agency, and their policy for a first time positive test was an immediate confirmation test and mandatory counseling. I am now asking any doctor or lab tech trolling this site that may have additional info on this please respond. There are countless folks out there needlessly suffering because a Dr was either jaded toward pain patients and did not heed their pleadings of innocence, or he feared sanctions by the DEA, or the lab simply made a mistake.

What do you mean that it quietly disappears? It hasn't disappeared because I am facing a probationary revocation. What can I do ? The lab tells me they do not perform isomer tests, a local lab that DOES perform them does not conduct tests on samples from other labs.

I found a local lab that does the isomer test but they do not accept specimens from other labs. The original lab that test came back positive with does not do isomer tests. What now? The original lab claims that the presence of methamphetamine at all indicated the use of methamphetamine, period. I'm facing prison.

So Adderall is an amphetamine and methamphetamine is a dextroamphetamine.......

Looked u up not a DR listed on any board I have access to. Your statement is not only irresponsible and false it borders ignorance. The mg drug dose does not effect the pharmodynamics within the body. Scary man really scary

They do the isomer test because prescription adderall (and generics) are all L-isomer while street drugs are a 50-50 mix of L and D. If they find the D-isomer it indicates the person had street drugs.

My advice would be give your doctor every chance to talk with you about it: call him at home, at the golf course, or arrange to be there when he arrives at his office in the morning. Failing that, you should contact a good lawyer with experience in this area. The doctor may ignore you, but he is much less likely to ignore someone representing the possibility of a expensive lawsuit. If the lawyer takes your case (i.e. he thinks it's valid and can be proven) then it may be done for free up-front, but for a percentage of any amount later awarded to you (assuming you win) by the court (or by out-of-court agreement) - one-third (33%) is typical for the lawyer's cut. If you lose in court, then you don't need to pay the lawyer. This is for civil lawsuits concerning money, not for criminal cases.

Besides Adderall, Ritalin etc, is there such a thing as a Methamphetamine pill, aka a street drug?

I'm dealing with the same thing. You have nothing to worry about (removal of your kids) if you test negative. You'll have to work with them for a few months longer and do random drug tests

If u take Zantac, then that's more likely the case. Ranitidine causes false positive

Yes, there is. The prescription drug Desoxyn is straight up Methamphetamine.

I don't think your reply is completely correct. The L & D isomers of the amphetamine molecule are also know as Levo and Dextro isomers. While the atomic content of D and L are the same, such molecules are sometimes described as existing in right-handed (D) vs left-handed (L) structures, and this same D/L principle exists in many other chemicals, drug-related and otherwise. Certain synthesis will result in a natural 50%-50% split between D and L forms, and such a result is sometimes called a "racemic" mixture.

With the amphetamine molecule, the Levo version is considered by many (especially for ADHD purposes) to be less desirable, because classic Levo effects include significant stimulation of peripheral body areas (i.e. effects are more physical than mental), as opposed to the classic brain-focused, cognitive sharpening effects which are much more associated with the Dextro version.

There are Dextro versions as commercial products, such as Dexedrine brand dextroamphetamine. For time-release purposes, Adderall is composed of 4 different chemicals (2 versions of amphetamine and 2 versions of dextroamphetamine). The amphetamine components are both racemic, therefore 50% Levo and 50% Dextro). The dextroamphetamine parts are 100% Dextro. Therefore the overall breakdown of Adderall is 75% Dextro and 25% Levo.

While I took several chemistry courses in high school and college, I did not major in chemistry and am not a chemist. Therefore, corrections to the above are welcome. I believe it to be correct as is, but perhaps less than professionally explained.
