Updated March 11, 2011

I went to the emergency room last week to get water drained from my elbow, the doctor gave me dicloxacill 500mg and said take this four times daily.
After 1 week my chest looked red and I felt very tired.
I stopped taking the medicen and took some benadryl per the er nurse. How long before the redness on my chest clears up?

It is very hard to say, it could take several days.

Since Dicloxacillin is an antibiotic, there are two possibilities for the cause of the reaction you had.

One is a normal side effect of most antbiotics, they can cause a skin rash, but it is not an allergic reaction and will usually disappear when you have finished or stop taking the medication.

The second, of course, is an allergic reaction. My guess is that if it didn't go away with the Benadryl, it was more than likely the first option and that means it will take a few days, until the medication is entirely processed out of your body, to clear up.
