Describe Addiction To Oxycodone

I was prescribed oxycodone 5 milligrams every 2 hours for pain. How addictive is that? What do I need to expect when I stop it or should I back of off it slowly? I've only been taking it for 1 month.

Very addictive Won’t take long before you have to have them every day
I would like to add that there is a different between addition and dependence.
Dependence occurs when you just take a therapeutically prescribed dose for a long period of time, your body gets used to having this substance added, and if you suddenly stop, you may experience some minor withdrawal effects, such as rebound pain, and insomnia. However, addiction generally occurs because someone likes the way the substance makes them feel, such as the high some people get from taking opiates, but since that is just a side effect, it eventually wears off, and they have to keep taking more and more to get those feelings back, thus they end up abusing the medication. If they suddenly stop taking it, after ingesting such high amounts, they could experience dangerous withdrawals that may include elevated blood pressure, elevated heart rate, and seizures.
Opioid Abuse and Addiction is explained very well in this article from MedlinePlus.
Suzzy, taking it every 2 hours is not a typical prescription protocol, it's usually every 4 to 6 hours. Please make sure to consult your doctor regularly, and if the time comes to stop taking it, you may need to slowly taper off, just to be safe.
Are you on any other medications?
You need to be carefully with this drug. It will make you fell good to the point where you need more and more . my advise is to use it for the pain then get off as soon as you can. 5 mils is very low. But its a start reply back and we can talk in private . I will tell you my story.
wow-im a retired nurse-thats a high dose of percocet-5mg every 2 hrs -not a lethal dose but addictive-you should be fine if you only take it as needed-doctors can also under treat someone due to pressure to cut down on opiad use-i have degenerative arthritis in feet, knees, and back- doc gives me 5 mg 2 x a day as needed but only 40 pills a month-thats not even a maintenance dose and does very little except have me ask a family member for some-there starts the addiction process
Ok for real, i wouldn't worry about it at all. If u are prescribed for an acute injury or pain take as directed. I am an addict because of pain management for a chronic condition. I would check your script directions though. Its usually 1-2 pills every 4-6 hours, not two. But your dose is very low and unlikely to cause u a problem. In comparison i was taking 60-90 milligrams every 4-6 hours. Its deadly amounts and a ten year tolerance. Keep talking to your doc about your concerns with taking the drug. When u stop telling your doctor the truth or stop asking him questions is the moment when u should worry. That fact that you are concerned now is a very good indicator that you wont have much problems when its no longer needed. Oxy ruined my life, i suffer daily in all kinds of pain for ten years. But... it is a legitimate drug with very legitimate uses. Anyone who tells you otherwise is wrong (most likely failing to admit to their own down falls. Its easier to call the drug evil). I made the choice to lie and dive in. No one should suffer needlessly. I've known many people who would be dead with out it (suicide from pain. I attempted it once myself because i was in so much physical pain, not withdrawal either). Follow your doctor's instructions, keep communication with him, tell him your concerns, you are gonna be ok.
