Depression And Nightmares

taking cymbalta and having terrible nightmares.is this a side effect?

I have had depression for as long as I can remember, I'm 29. I've been on Celexa for about 3 years now and it has helped a lot, but for the past 2 weeks its gotten really bad. And to top it all off i've been having horrible nightmares, which make me feel worst. the dreams are so vivid and scary. Does it have anything to do with my depression??

Have either one of you consulted your doctors?

The nightmares could be related to the medication, the depression, or both and only a doctor will be able to help you determine that.

Sakura, your body can get used to any medication that you take for a long period of time and this means the current dosage may lose its effectiveness. You may require a dosage adjustment or a switch to a different medication.

Anti-depressives do cause vivid dreams. I look at it this way... when they are good, they are very, very good and when they are bad they are horrid. I have woke up screaming. I am on cymbalta now and they don't seem near as bad as when I was on Wellbutrin or Prozac.

I have taken 60 mg. of Cymbalta for about 5 years now. I have taken Paxil, Effexor, Zoloft, Prozac and now Cymbalta. It has worked wonders for me and I don't think I would be here w/o it. I had heart palpitations, dizziness, and nausea when I first started taking it, but I wanted help so bad, that I thought of Cymbalta as my 'last resort', so I just sucked it up and kept taking it. It came at a time when I was suicidal and it was either the Cymbalta was going to kill me or I was going to. I think it is for MAJOR depression, and is one of the "big guns" in anti-depression medication. I don't believe it's for temporary depression such as a death in the family, or losing a job. I know it's used for a chemical imbalance in the brain, something we can't control by meditation or relaxation. There's NOT a one-size-fits-all in these medications that alter the brain activity, and there's nothing darker than depression! So, what works for me, may not work for someone else. I hear about all the 'evils' of weaning off it, but if there is a CHEMICAL imbalance (which isn't likely to heal itself), and it's something you NEED, then WHY would you want to get off it??? I know the expense is great and no one likes to pop pills, but to me, it may be a necessary evil to keep taking it from now on if it works. I've been depressed for over 40 years, so it's really given me another chance at life---and too bad it had to come so late in my life, which is almost over now. I would give anything if Cymbalta had been available back when I was young and could have enjoyed life. Don't let life pass you by because of depression! It's a tricky sympton to treat because the brain is so complicated and intricate. Most of my depression in my younger years was definitely hormonal, so ladies, maybe you want to try hormones at first before you decide you are chemically depressed. There wasn't that much known about hormones when I was growing up--but you have all the chances in the world with the internet and other information out there! Hormones can wreak havoc on your mind and body!! God Bless!
