Delayed Accutane Side Effects
UpdatedI was on accutane in the early 90's (right after it was approved) and it did the job at the time.
Now, 20 years later, I went through a severe episode of osteolysis, where my jaw bones literally melted away. I had 4 gum surgery to remove bad tissues, gum grafts, and I have scaling (deep gum cleaning with the hook from hell) every 4 months.
Is there anyone else out there with the same problems that took accutane in the past?
The very nature of this problem, that is an asymptomatic periodontisis with bone loss, is a very long process, and subtle one. So if this is accutane related, I doubt that it is a well documented long term side effect yet.
Anyway, I am asking because 2 dentist told me that I was not the first one to bring up this link between accutane and gum/bone problems.
Thanks,
JSJ

Some bone problems and bone disease has been reported with Accutane usage and is listed in the side effects. It is also listed as something that does not stop with discontinuation of the medication.
this site is not medical professionals, however, so cannot say for sure that this was definitely caused by the medication. Proving such would be very difficult.

This could be the reason I have terrible pain in my sinus cavities. I cant remember when I woke up feeling good. I've been to several doctors for sinus problems and I've taken several different meds for it but nothing has worked. I dont have a deviated nasal septum and allery injections did nothing for me. Probably can attrubute this to the accutane. What a terrible drug.
I too took Accutane around late 80's early 90's. I was in my early 20's at the time. I don't remember my exact dosage, but was on it for 6 months starting at a low dosage that my Dermatologist slowly increased every month. My acne actually got much worse during my treatment and I experienced the usual side effects; dry lips, skin, scalp. However, about 7 years ago, I went to the dentist to have a back tooth removed. The Xray showed upper jawbone loss, which he thought may have been from the infected tooth, but he was also a little disturbed by how much bone loss there was. I never thought to attribute the bone loss to the Accutane until I read your post.
FYI- the Accutane worked. My cystic acne got much worse, and was quite bad, even on the very last day. A week after I stopped, my face completely cleared up and to this day, I have never experienced cyctic acne again. I get the occasional very small pimple here and there during my period, but that's about it.
I just found that I have the same problem of bone loss. I took accutane for a severe case of rosacea for 1 year and that is the only medication that I have taken other than blood pressure medication. I took accutane about 9-10 years ago. I have always maintained good dental care, therefore that could not have been the reason for this problem.
Hi l also took roaccutane in the early 90 s in now 40 and i have periodontitis and my bone is also shrinking my dentist is telling me its from smoking but i believe the accutane is to blame so glad i found your post
