Dangerous Switch From Prozac To Effexor But Still On It
UpdatedI was on prozac for two years -- a gradual increase from 0 to 60mg. At first it worked and then it seemed to stop working (for depression). I started to become more depressed than I was before (loss of appetite, sleeping more, no motivation etc.) and my doctor decided to switch me from Prozac to Effexor saying that the transition would be fine. I went from taking 60mg of prozac one day to the next taking 225mg of Effexor. The result was not good.
For the next couple days I had extremely blurred vision/ I couldn't go outside because the sun hurt my eyes. It was hard for me to go from lying down to standing up and four days after starting the 225mg I had a seizure in the shower.
Despite this, my doctor insisted that this was because I wasn't eating/hydrating properly and sleeping too much-- that this was me self harming and never brought up the idea that the meds might have some effect (denying it when I asked).
The week after she sent me a letter saying that she had to stop seeing me because she could not be liable for my behavior.
These severe symptoms seem to have disappeared but I have gained 20 pounds, have digestion problems, more acne, and seem to be forgetting things. It has now been about six months since I started and I do feel a lot better (depression wise) but I don't know if this is the right medication for me.

Why didn't your doctor try increasing the Prozac, again?
Ideally, when switching from Prozac to Effexor, a cross taper should be used, where you slowly go down on the Prozac, until you hit 20mgs, then stop it, while at the same time slowly starting to go up on the Effexor. You can read more details on HealthLine.
I think it would really be best for you to see a new doctor and get their perspective on this matter.
Were you seeing a GP, or a specialist?
