Dea Change For Tussigon
UpdatedMy dog has been taking Tussigon for cough for over a year, and suddenly, DEA changed status of Tussigon. We were not be able to fill medications for two weeks, and we were considered put him down. However, we found an Emergency Vet who has Tussigon, and we got it from him. A lot of vets don'w know the regulation changes by DEA, so they don't have a right prescription pad to write Tussigon. Dogs suffer because of DEA regulation changes. Not fair for the dogs. Nothing works like Tussigon does for the dog for coughing. I am trying to find a way to obtain more medication for my dog very soon.....

I am very sorry about the problem that you've had. How is your fur baby doing, now?
I strongly urge you not to put your pet down, because they have a cough. Unless their health is seriously sliding downhill, a cough is just an annoyance.
As to getting this medication, I'd suggest speaking to your regular vet, to make sure they are aware of the regulatory changes, so they can help you make sure that you are able to keep a regular supply on hand for your canine friend.
This is a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.
My vet placed an order last week 4/17 for hydrocodone syurp for my elderly dog that suffers with a Collapsed Trachea, I was told today 5/2/17 that it has to be approved by the DEA? I've never heard of this before, does anyone know how long the approval would take? I hate having my dog coughing and I can't help him.
My 12 year old dog takes Tussigon for a cough and enlarged heart and will need it for the rest of his life. Problem is the cost is $3 per pill through the vet. He takes 2 pills a day now, but will eventually need 3 pills a day! Vet says they can only dispense pills, they cannot write a prescription since Tussigon is a controlled substance. I understand it is a controlled substance and is regulated more than ever now, but in CA consumers also have the right to get written prescriptions from vets to purchase medications through pharmacies.
Question, do the new DEA regulations preclude ALL CA vets from writing written prescriptions for Tussigon now, or only those that are not registered with DEA properly? If the latter is the case, how would I find a vet in CA that is DEA registered to write prescriptions (not dispense) for Class III controlled substances? I'm willing to try generic forms as well, if I can get it cheaper elsewhere. Thank you!
My dog has been on it for over 4 months for cancer of the mouth and coughing. I get it from a compounding pharmacy for pets. I called all over and there weren't any pharmacies that carried it. I have my vet write it out for a months supply. It is expensive but my dog is doing wonderful on it.
Re: Jen (# 3)
I also us this and us tomlyn pill masker to disguise the pills. This works great and my dog thinks he's getting a treat.
