D 572 Pill

My mother takes losartan 25 mg, but her last Rx was filled with a white round pill, with a D on one side and 572 on the other side. She said it gives her a severe headache. Could this be an Rx filling error?

The pill with a logo and the number 572 on the opposite side does contain 25mgs of Losartan, an ARB that is commonly used to help control high blood pressure.

Has her blood pressure been checked, since she started taking these tablets?

There can be differences in generic medications, the FDA does allow them to differ in the active ingredient by as much as plus or minus 20%, they consider this an acceptable therapeutic window.

For most people, the difference has no effect, but some people are very sensitive to medications and can suffer problems with the slightest fluctuation of the active ingredient.

A headache can be a normal side effect of this class of medications and having it happen now, on taking this different tablet could be cause by 3 different things:

1) She could be getting more of the active ingredient and it is causing her to suffer more side effects.

2) She may not be getting enough of the active ingredient and her blood pressure is going too high.

0r 3) She could be getting too much and her blood pressure is going too low.

Thus, I can't really say which one is causing her problem, but she does need to consult her doctor, so it can be checked.

Depending on what's causing the problem, her doctor can write a prescription with the name brand as being medically necessary, she could ask the pharmacy to order in the prior pills she was getting, or the doctor can adjust her dosage or switch her to a different medication.
