Cymbalta Absorption In Gastric Bypass
UpdatedI had a gastric bypass in 2001. I am on a higher dose of Cymbalta. Does anyone know if the absorption of this medication altered by gastric bypass?

Most medications are, but to be certain, I would recommend checking with your doctor or pharmacist, they will be the only ones who can give you a definite answer on that in relation to the dosage you are on.
I had Gastric bypass some years ago. There doesn't seem to be any difference.
I had RNY surgery in 2003. It seems I take higher dosages of ANYTHING, due to the surgery. When (blood) lithium levels were tested, and medication was supposedly a theraputic dosage, I had much lower levels than the norm. I use a pill sorter and NEVER miss doses, so go figure.
I had RNY in 2006. I don't know about Cymbalta, but my surgeon said that long acting or extended release medications don't work as well. I have found this to be true.
I had gastric bypass in November 2004. Weight is great, but I wonder about med absorption. I have had abdominal and back pain for two years now, can't find the cause??, but anyway I seem to have to take more meds (nerve and pain meds) to get any results. Does anyone else have a problem with pain meds not working as well and need much higher doses?
I had Gastric Bypass June of 2006 and I am 20 years old now. My stomach doesn't absorb anything whether it is vitamins or pills. I take everything in liquid form or a high dose in pill if no liquid is available. All I can say is the most important thing you could possibly do for yourself is TAKE YOUR VITAMINS! I didn't and now I have horrible abdominal pain from the deficiences and terrible constipation everyday. My fibromyalgia got out of control after my surgery. I have been taking Lyrica for 1 year and it is better then any medication I have besides my 3 main vitamins. If I miss one dose of lyrica I am is ridiculous pain all day and can't sleep a wink. The only problem with Lyrica was once in a while swelling of legs , sleepiness, and it doesn't treat depression. I just picked up my Cymbalta today, took my fist dose, and my stomach started hurting really bad and I threw up a few times. But then I forced myself to eat more even though I had 1/4 a sandwitch and then felt a little better. I am hesitating now on the Cymbalta I only choose this instead of Zoloft that I knew worked in the past that this helps treat fibro as well. Good luck everyone.
I am wondering the same thing. I am now on 120 mg of Cymbalta. I had my Fobi Pouch procedure in October 2005. I know Cymbalta is timed-release but didn't remember this until just recently when I transcribed a report that said so. I take two 60 mg capsules a day. I'm trying to figure out when I should take the 2nd of the capsules to see if I will get more of the medicine into my system. I'm obviously only getting a little of it.
I had bypass in 2005, and now have lower back pain do to L3-L5 and I'am having the same problem. the long acting pill is ment to last 12 hours but it stop's after just about 7, and I wounderif what's happening to you is happening to me. I'am trying to find out if there is some truth about the bypass.
I'm 10yrs post Gastric bypass surgery. I heard Cymbalta was hard on the liver. Since everything we take goes directly to our liver, does anyone know if Cymbalta has a greater impact on us?
I just started taking Cymbalta and the pharmacist said that I will only absorb around 50% of this medication so I should take it twice a day so it will last all day and have Mr doctor double the dose he wants me on since I will only absorb 50%
I had Roux-n-y gastric bypass in 2004. I need higher doses of all my medications. It's very frustrating because doctors that aren't particularly familiar with post op bypass patients think I'm drug seeking. What I am is pain relief seeking. All doctors should be well versed with gastric bypass patients since it's so common to have the procedure now, especially patients that are 10 or so years out. They tend to treat us like "normal people" instead of the people who have totally different absorption and digestive processes. I am also an RN so I am at least able to educate the doctors from both a professional and patient stand point.
Re: Toni (# 11)
Being 18 years out I have suffered alost every complication from Open RNY. Doctors knew nothing, as I am also a chronic pain suffer. It has literally been only 3 years since I have been close to normal. I never related any of my issues to GBS. TAKE YOUR VITAMINS! I didn't, I ended up losing my hair, teeth, ability to walk, hold a fork, (painful neuropathy), bowel obstructions, was 114 pounds at 5'9". I'm so much better, now that I have a great PCP, minus my beautiful natural smile.
