Current Laws For Narcotic Use In North Carolina

Updated October 20, 2022

I have chronic leg pain and suffer from severe daily migraines. I use narcotic meds to treat both and see my primary care provider monthly to follow up. I am getting ready to undergo surgery with a specialist and will require a narcotic not as strong to help me get through for a few days. Can I legally get this filled in North Carolina with the new laws?

The best person to ask is probably your regular pharmacist. They are used to answering such questions for customers, so there shouldn't be a problem if you speak to them in person to ask.

Most state controlled substance laws do contain special exception rules to allow for issues like this, which would be a temporary dosage adjustment, but your pharmacist will be able to provide you with more specific details relevant to NC.

The FDA warns that narcotic medications carry the risk of being habit forming, and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, constipation, and dry mouth.

Is there anything I can help with?

Best of luck with your surgery.
