It typically takes a week for this medication to reach its full level of effectiveness in your body to prevent pregnancy. Thus, you'd need to use a backup method of contraception until the 8th day.
Unless you start it on the first day of your period, then it will be effective immediately.
The FDA lists the typical side effects of oral contraceptives as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, irritability, breakthrough bleeding and PMS-like symptoms. Thus yes, there is a risk it could make you vomit.
