Concerned Parent
UpdatedI am currently debating whether or not to have my son start taking this drug. He is an athlete Basketball, football and baseball and I heard there is a lot of joint pain with this medication. He is 15 and I do not want to feel that giving the Dermatologist permission to prescribe this pill will later in life ruin his athletic potential. I have read the "possible side effects" however we have tried several things and this would be our last resort. I feel that my son is self conscience last year he did not want to swim, the acne is starting to scar his back, shoulders, and face. What else can I possibly do except allow him to try absorica? I'm just so concerned about the side effects. What are really the percentages of side effects in people? i.e. joint pain, depression, etc.

Hi Maria,
Coming from someone who's taken this medication in the past, if I had known what I know now, I probably would have avoided it at all costs, despite a burning desire to get rid of my acne at the time.
The following discussion thread has over 1200 replies on the topic of accutane/absorica (Isotretinoin). You may want to have a look at what people on there are saying with regards to side effects: Discuss/accutane-long-term-side-effects-191307.htm
In my honest opinion, had I not taken accutane, I would have started eating a diet of "predominately" fresh ripe raw organic fruits and vegetables to help heal my body from the inside out. When I was 15-16 starting accutane I used to believe that food didn't have any effect on my breakouts. Little did I know it actually had a profound effect over the years. You literally "are" what you put into your body.
So I think going the natural route would be a much safer and equally effective route in the long run (if he remains dedicated to this lifestyle change in eating). Not to mention all the nutrients should inevitably help his sport performance and energy levels.
I hope this advice helps! :)
I recently went to spa/clinic/ thought it was dermatologist seeking help for my acne, by the way I'm 29 and started getting kinda bad around 28. So I go to skin fitness dallas of oak lawn dallas tx., we talked about my issue and I brought up accutane, I had done a lil research over it already. His own words were " oh no that's stuff can be real harmfull on I wouldn't recond it". So he did 3 treatments of blue light levulla, (expensive). Painful process and the last treatment made me break out really bad. Now he sent me to a different dermatologist that recommended absorica. I think I rather keep a healthy diet plus no sodas, and use alo Vera. Basically what I'm trying to say is these doctors can't proof half of what they speak off, it's all about that green rectangle their after. I wish you the best of luck if you're on absorica.
I am in my fourth mont of Absorbica and all I have experienced is dry lips and a constantly clearer face!
Hello. Did you end up having your son do the absorica? I am also very concerned as my son is a high school football player. His senior year. If you do do it, did your son have any muscle /performance problems at all? Thank you
I took absorbica for six months. 40 mg I have been off for three months and the back and joint pain is excruciating! My skin is clear but it came with a price. I can no longer move literally. It hurts to do anything. My joints are fragile and any sudden movement can be awful. How long will these symptoms last? Is there anything I can take to help with the back and joint pains?
