Coming Off Topiramate (Top voted first)

I was on topiramate for the last 2 1/2 years for migraines. I am a therapist and was getting pretty fed up with the cognitive side effects, as well as hope to try and have a baby in the next year so I stopped taking it. Cognitive side effects went away immediately for me, however I have gained 10 lbs in the last 3 weeks. I read about this and was worried, but given the fact that I never really lost much weight on the drug, I didn't think it would effect me in that way. Just be warned, you may love the weight loss now, but it comes back on when you stop it even if you are eating right and exercising!

Although weight loss is listed as a general side effect of Topiramate, for some reason I get the sense that this medication plays with your hormones as well; which would explain why the weight suddenly rebounds when you stop taking it (perhaps due to a fluctuation in hormonal activity).

Many of this drug's side effects, such as missed menstrual periods, excessive menstrual bleeding, hair loss, growth of hair in unusual places, etc, are all similar to the side effect list you'll see for many hormonal contraceptives.

I mean, I would agree with you. I definitely had hair loss and skin issues while on it and since I stopped taking it, my menstrual cycle has been a mess. So does anyone have ideas on how to counteract this problem?
