Coming Off Coveram (Top voted first)

Updated

I am 54 years old, on Coveram 5/10 and I'm pretty certain that I could manage my blood pressure on my own with diet and exercise. I think I was put on it too hastily without really giving these other ways a good go first. I want to stop taking Coveram and try on my own. What are the risks in stopping Coveram suddenly?

Hello, Jules! How are you?

It could cause your blood pressure and heart rate to rebound, which could cause them to hit dangerously high levels. When going off of a medication like this, you should taper off slowly, with your doctor's supervision.

The FDA lists the typical side effects of this medication as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased urination and hypotension.

What are your current levels?

My doctor has said that I should be 130/80. Currently, with Coveram 5/10 I am a little more than this 138/89. Before Coveram, I was around 142/90. I think my doctor has rushed to put me on this medication and given it was not that high, I am sure I could have controlled it myself with diet and exercise. I want to come off this medication to try my own way, but my doctor suggests I don't. I am not sure if this is for my benefit or for her protection. What you suggest, is that I come off slowly so as not to spike my blood pressure? I can do that. I do have an enlargement on my aorta but that isn't that serious as yet either. It may sound as if I am being silly, but I have thought about this and really feel that I don't need this medication and that taking care of myself naturally rather than through medication would suit me better. If I don't succeed, then I can always go back on the medication and at least I will know for certain then, that I need it. Do you agree?
