Cold Sores On My Lips

I have developed 2 cold sores. Can Amox-Clav help cure them? They are very tender to the touch and my lips are swollen.

Hello, Laura! How are you doing? I am sorry about the cold sores, I know how horrible they can be.

And no, an antibiotic will not do anything to help, since they are caused by a virus.

To help prevent them, in the future, you may want to ask your doctor about trying Acyclovir, since it is approved to reduce the outbreaks. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, stomach pain, and diarrhea.

Are you on any other medications?
