Clindamycin Refill Mistake?
UpdatedTomorrow, I will be finished with a 10-day prescription of Clindamycin for a severe bacterial infection following a root canal. I noticed, long after I was taking them that the RX had one refill of another 10-day (3x daily) bottle. I called my dentist's office today and spoke only to the receptionist (long time grown woman - not a kid) and asked if that was an error at the pharmacy or were I to have it refilled and take it for another 10 days. She said yes and that was without hesitation, and I asked twice. The pharmacist at the drugstore agreed that a 10-day RX was unusual. My dentist is closed Friday through Sunday (and tomorrow is Friday). Is this typical - or was a mistake made? My infection 100% better (tennis ball size swelling just about gone, and I think I'll live. I missed five days of work and actually took the opioid pain pills, which I almost never do - I have a pretty high pain tolerance but this was worse than childbirth.

Sometimes, doctors will add a refill, in case you need it, but that doesn't always mean you are required to take it. In such cases, you should consult your doctor, because a secretary in his office might not always be the most informed person.
The FDA lists the typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash, and diarrhea.
How are you doing, now?

Nauseated. I filled it but didn't take it right away. But I felt that the infection was coming back and started taking it. I have appointment with dentist in the AM and should get a clear answer. Thank you for your reply. I just took a Nexium - forgot I had them. Hope it helps the nausea and reflux. I'm also taking good probiotic and lots of yogurt (read about C. Diff being possibility with this antibiotic).
I don't think it's uncommon. I've had refills of clindamycin for a tooth abscess. Depends on how bad the infection is. If you feel that uncomfortable about taking them; i would just refill it and when you can actually speak to your dentist or dental nurse you can confirm
Mimi; yes this is pretty normal on Clindamycin. It sounds like you had a pretty bad infection going on and the reason many dentist write the prescription for 10 days with a refill is sometimes you have no dought that you need to keep taking it but the main reason is if you were to have a reaction to them you would be stuck with the whole amount instead of just the 1/2 so please fill it and take it until it is gone. Have a great weekend. Chuck1957
