Clarithromycin And Abnormal Heart Rhyrhm
UpdatedI have a history of heart arrthymias and just started taking Biaxin. After 2 days of taking 500 mg. 2 x day I seem to be having more arrhythmias. There is also a horrible taste in my mouth. My Dr said I had some fluid in one ear and a possible sinus infection. Three people I've been in contact with recently had these same symptoms which makes me think this is a virus but would amoxicillin be a better choice for me?

Amoxicillin is an antibiotic in a different class than the clarithromycin you are taking but still an antibiotic. Viruses cannot be treated with antibiotics. Viruses just have to run their course. The only thing you can do against a virus is usually to vaccinate for it before it happens except there isn't one for the common Cold. Zinc is good for shortening colds and of course before you get the flu you can get a flu shot or no more than 24 hours after getting the flu you can take a prescription called Tamiflu but those are the only choices. Antibiotics will not kill or even slow down a virus.
Thanks for the response and suggestions! Since my Dr did no tests/cultures, I can't be sure this is a bacterial infection. I still suspect it's a virus but am taking the amoxicillin just in case I do have a sinus and ear infection like he says. I take zinc, take probiotics and have been spending a lot of time in a steamy shower. I'm generally healthy and prefer natural and preventative measures when I can. I have an itching sensation in my chest when I breathe deeply and am coughing a lot to the point where I've pulled some muscles over my lower rib. So now I'm dealing with that! But, after 2 1/2 days of antibiotics I do feel better.
Great! I am so glad you are doing better. It does sound like you maybe have an infection in the lungs which is usually bacteria so it is good you switched antibiotics. I agree with you to stay as natural as you can. The more we use antibiotics the more redistance the bacteria become to them. Someday antibiotics won't work at all and we will really be in trouble. I'm glad you are questioning your doctor most patients forget they have the right to do this. Keep safe and keep asking questions! God bless.
It sounds like we think alike! After spending 6 months with my mom as she was going through chemo and a stem cell transplant in Atlanta, I became a determined patient advocate. I saw so much and experienced so many positive and negative situations. Now, I ALWAYS ask doctors questions and have a view different from most. The way I look at it, I'm paying for a service and I have the right to participate and question. I know my mom came from the old school where you never question a doctor and just trust that he/ she knows best. They're only human after all...
