Citalopram Sleep Disturbance

I've been on Citalopram for 6 weeks, one of the major issues I have been having over the past 2 weeks is waking up 2-3 time's a night. I can fall asleep easily but its the waking up. Interesting that this sleep disturbance side effect has just started 2 weeks ago, and increasing. It's becoming problematic to my daily life. I'm seeing my Dr this week, and considering whether to go off them. Aside from this side effect and sexual dysfunction, jittering during the day, they seem to be definitely taking the edge of depression. Any other shared experiences or information would be appreciated

HI, Madison! Sorry about the problem that you're having.

Citalopram is an SSRI class antidepressant and they are well known to cause sleep disturbances in some people that take them. There's no predictability on when it will occur, but about 4 to 6 weeks is usually when side effects do hit their peak in intensity.

Learn more Citalopram details here.

The actual disturbances of waking frequently do tend to wear off, but they also cause REM onset latency, which means they cause your REM sleep stage to be shorter than normal and that tends to continue the entire time that you're taking it. This often results in your feeling more tired, when you wake, even though you may have slept a good solid 8 hours.

Have you tried any other antidepressants, or just this one?
