I do have high cholesterol and high triglycerides(sp?) but the Cholestyramine was prescribed for me for diarrhea and such since my gall-bladder surgery. i am confused as it is not on the instructions re: what I went to the doctor to have "fixed"? I was losing my stools 3 or 4 times per day.

Cholestramine was originally for High cholesterol but people were getting constipated bad . I had small bowel resection and ileum removed so I take a packet with orange juice in the morning followed by six (2 at a time) generic citrucel to keep from getting a blockage. Had surgery last March still have days when I have to take another packet. Diarrhea just comes on for unknown reason sometimes.

Yes I do take it early. I find the only side effect was it makes me sleepy. So I take it early and go back to sleep.

Hi, Has anyone ever taken Cholestyramine oral powder first thing in morning before having your coffee? I took my first does this evening and mixed it with cold water and it was not bad at all.
I read where you could eat half hour after.
I have so many different meds so just wondering if anyone took the powder either first thing in morning or after your coffee?

Thank you!!

Yes it really takes away the morning bright start!! Makes me very lethargic and sleepy but it's still better than a bowel issue

You will need to be faithful to your cholestyramine. It does work and has been a Gods send to me. You should read up on when you can take other medicines. If I take cholestyramine then I know I have to wait four hours before I can take any other drug. Or you can take your medication one hour before you take the cholestryamine. All my medications are timed around it.

It's really too bad that each of us had to suffer so much before it was discovered
That a simple drink would help us. Thanks t

If you are eating yogurt every day and having diarrhea, you could be lactose intolerant. Took me many years to figure this out. Now i use lactose free milk. It is also in cheese and ice cream, etc. Worth a try to eliminate these foods for a few days.

Yes, I'm in touch with my regular Dr, and a gastrointestinal Dr., who says that my symptoms are being treated, not the actual cause of long term loose bowels. About 40 years ago, I had diarrhea for over 9 months before it went away.
It just seems like I'm going through a similar situation now.
My specialist has done a wide variety of tests, and next is something called a ECRP (I think that's what it's called).
And, another colonoscopy, even though one was done just last year.
All I want, is to stabilise my intestines!
I've applied my mind to introduce a type of self hypnosis in a desperate attempt to be normal, and it's helping!

I am interested to know if you are having any success since you first started taking the cholestyramine? It takes awhile to notice a difference.

I've been talking 5 scoops of cholestyramine power and 5 Imodium, and one Kayopectate tablet each day for about 9 months, just to stabilise my intestines. Because I've recently had to go up to 7 scoops of cholestyramine power and 6 Imodium a day, I have learned, (the hard way) to switch to a premium version of Imodium that also treats abdominal cramps and gas. This new combination has been helping me to be as stable as possible! Of course, it's my hope to gradually taper off whilst avoiding the loose bowels. So, the extra cost for the premium Imodium is about $30 a month, and worth every penny!

I also get the tired and sleepy feeling after I take the cholestyramine. It does lessen as the day wears on. It is good to hear it isn't only me that feels that way.

I've been taking 4 scoops of cholestyramine and 4 to 5 Imodium a day for about 6 months now~ just to try to have stable intestines each day.
With all this, I still have loose bowels every day.
I have discovered that when mixing cholestyramine with (silk brand) coconut milk (located next to almond milk at the store) ~ that when mixing the two~ that they bubble up into a froth.
This makes the cholestyramine more palatable!
I am beginning to wonder if the D. will ever go away!

I've been taking choleststamine for the past 4 years for problems with diarrhea after removal of gall bladder. I am a nurse that also has a chronic leukemia, so I have to play that game watch my other drugs I take. I try to take it very early in am as it makes me very fatigued so if I can take it early in the morning around 5 am then I go back to bed and sleep until 930 or 10 am. It's a late start to the day but it's better than feeling sleepy for four hours. Then I don't take any meds until at night when I go to bed so it doesn't cause any problems. I'm on an oncological oral drug as well as Plavix because I had an aortal valve put in. It does work out unless I sleep later. I don't like the drug but it does stop the diarrhea!!

I have begun taking Cholestyramine about 1 month ago for d. (no gallbladder). I had it removed 10 years ago but about 2 years ago I found I was making more trips to the bathroom due to d. I went to a gastro doctor and he put me on Cholestyramine powder. I started with packets from Sandoz. Since my insurance requires me to do mail order they sent me cans of powder from PAR mfg. I like that brand better since I don't feel any nausea. I take it 2 x a day and mix it with Unsweet Ice Tea and 1 packet of Stevia plus the powder. It is helping a lot but I still need to watch that I don't eat high fat foods. I still take Immodium with me when I plan to travel since my confidence has been shaken (I use it very sparingly). I am 66 and think that this is as good as it is going to ever be. Thanks for listening and it helps to know what other people are doing and what works for them.

Since you were on cefalexon on you need to be on a stronge probiotics. Yogurt will do no good. The antibiotic you were on kills all the bad an good bacteria. Go to any pharmacy and pick up a 80 billon plus probiotic. Find a liquid multi vitamin as well. If you find yourself sensitive to red meat as well that is a side effect of the antibiotic, hopefully that will pass, it didn't for me. God bless hope this helps you.
