Hi Dobby,

In general, benzodiazepines, such as Chlordiazepoxide, act as depressants of the central nervous system (CNS), producing all levels of CNS depression from mild sedation to hypnosis to coma depending on dose. In laymen's terms, the sedation of the CNS allows food to digest without any disturbance from other bodily functions or feelings, per say.

Clidinium is an Anticholinergic that works hand in hand with Chlordiazepoxide to inhibit the muscarinic actions of acetylcholine on structures innervated by postganglionic cholinergic nerves as well as on smooth muscles that respond to acetylcholine but lack cholinergic innervation. These postganglionic receptor sites are present in the autonomic effector cells of the smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, sinoatrial and atrioventricular nodes, and exocrine glands. Depending on the dose, anticholinergics may reduce the motility and secretory activity of the gastrointestinal system. (This factor plays a significant role in how quickly food gets digested).

Example of how the CNS effects Digestion:
Digestion is controlled by the enteric nervous system, a system composed of hundreds of millions of nerves that communicate with the central nervous system. When stress activates the "flight or fight" response in your central nervous system, digestion can shut down because your central nervous system shuts down blood flow, affects the contractions of your digestive muscles, and decreases secretions needed for digestion. Stress can cause inflammation of the gastrointestinal system, and make you more susceptible to infection.
