My wife was prescribed Cephalexin for a stye and I was wondering since it is an antibiotic, whether it is okay for her to be out in the sun? I could not find anything on the included drug label insert specifically mentioning sun exposure risks, but I thought I would check seeing as how other antibiotics are known to increase sensitivity to sunlight. Any feedback appreciated. The weather's been real nice and we've been wanting to spend time outdoors and at swimming pools.

Cephalexin should not cause an increased sensitivity to sunlight (there is no mention of a concern or interaction from the NIH or Medline Plus). There are other antibiotics which are known to increase photosensitivity, and those are: doxycycline, tetracycline, ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, ofloxacin, trimethoprim. [1] (note that Cephalexin is not on that list). Of course she will want to take standard precautions while spending time in the sun, namely applying sunblock and staying hydrated. I hope this helps!
