Cefuroxime Long Term Use
UpdatedFollowing breast cancer, severe infection @ mastectomy site, 3 celulitis infectiions, all within 11 months, my Infectious Disease doctor prescribed 500mg tab of Cefuroxime. Have been taking this for 10 years. Is this ok? This was after heavy duty IV antibiotics in hospital & @ home. I haven't had any kind of infection since then. Any side effects to this?

Hello, Eileen! How are you?
Yes, this is often done, if someone has had severe problems with infections, or is particular prone to them. You should continue it, as long as your doctor deems is necessary.
The FDA lists the typical side effects of this antibiotic as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea.
Is there anything else I can help with?
