Can Prescription From Minnesota Be Filled In Florida??
UpdatedThis is our first year being snowbirds in Florida. I have a written prescription for dextroamphetamine from my doctor in Minnesota. Am I able to have it filled in Florida? Also I have called many Walgreens and CVS's where I have had it filled at in Mn, and none have had it in stock. Any suggestions?????

There is usually a shortage this time of year, due to mandatory manufacturing limits on controlled substances, additionally, there are limits to how much any pharmacy is allowed to order in and have in stock, which are also being enforced now.

When will you be in Florida?
I'd suggest asking one of your local pharmacies if they can check with an affiliate in Florida for you.
If I see a general practitioner in Florida and I am given a prescription for a non narcotic can I have that prescription filled in the state of Minnesota will they honor a Florida prescription from a Florida doctor
@ Iris, Verwon & Linda,
I have been on Dextroamphetamine uninterrupted for the past 23+ years. I am old enough to also, have had some shorter time prescriptions for C-II, C-III, and C-IV prescriptions for, Dexedrine Spansules, Desbutal Tabs, Dexamyl Spansules, back
from the year 1969 thru the year ending in 1976.
I once had a military prescription written by my flight surgeon in the 1970's for prescriptions for "non DEA controlled substances, as well as from American Medical Association MD of Internal Medicine, for controlled substances, from a
C-IV, such as Roche Valium, a C-II for Dexedrine Spansules, Desbutal tabs discontinued, in July of 1973, by DEA ruling, but "the best ADHD med I have ever taken (methamphetamine extended release with 90 mg of Sodium Pento-barbital instant release by Abbott Labs USA), even, Methaqualone (Quaalude) when it was a C-VI, yes C-6, with PRN refills for one year, until the DEA changed the status of this sedative in July 1973 to a C-II (later) a C-I by January of 1984.
In the old days, (1970's), I never had a problem, providing, I had a face to face talk with a combined owner and pharmacist of a independent, non chain pharmacy, or a very small in state multiple chain pharmacy, like in a metro region within a single state of the USA, and, presented my prescription, in due time, (important), and, most of those occasions, I did get the prescription filled, it was a long long time ago. I always had an appropriate ID, either USA drivers license, or a military ID, with or without my photo on the old school USA drivers license, + even a Passport! even a Military drivers license and or an International drivers license, and even a letter from my MD of my Diagnosis, in civilian life, on MD letterhead with my DX and
all of the ICD-9 ICD-10 codes and, the DSM-IV codes plenty of telephone numbers of MD's and pharmacies, from out of state, from actual Rx bottles with my name on the bottle, and all verifying info, if needed.
The Prescription Monitoring Program, in the USA, has eliminated some of the needs of, my way of showing authenticity in the computer age!!! (Example: New Mexico and both of the Carolinas went live from 2006 to 2007, and they exchange information in a NY minute via the national data bank!)
Beware, of the generation born before the year 1980, that is a male or female who is working in a pharmacy, that is under age 37 years old!!! I have had some verbal unfortunate exchanges with what I call "cocky" new age pharmacists with a certain attitude, IDK if it is profiling for a drug-seeking behavior or not, but I am beginning to hate going to any national chain pharmacy in the USA!!!
IMHO, it is very important, "always has been" to develop a relationship of trust, with an aging pharmacist, or a now rare pharmacist/owner, as it has become a daunting task to achieve for at least the past 17 to 18 years........ IMHO.
Even the independent pharmacies are feeling the pressure of the big chain pharmacies in the USA, and, this causes, the availability of quality meds, in stock in a small family pharmacy to be sometimes unavailable, I have had to special order some meds, and paid a premium price for this service, but, what else can I do??? Is it to accept an inferior product of often a generic or a new patent on a meddled with formula of a 1st cousin pharmaceutical, and, I have even....
cut my ties with even my long relationships with my independent pharmacy when they push an inferior brand of a generic, and/or price gouge me, to special order my drug of choice, and, I am caught in the middle as, the Managed Care
formulary Gods of the Universe say, "not on formulary so I have to pay cash in fist out of my pocket for my meds.
My prescription bills run over $10,000.00 annually because of this, and it all started for me in the era beginning around the year 2010 to 2012, and it gets worse and worse every year!!!
I do what is necessary I will not print on this public forum but it is a sad state of affairs within the USA medical system, the M.D's to the pharmaceuticals, to the debatable quality control to, the, DEA, and especially for pain med patients
all over the entire USA!!!
Sometimes I was in my USAF uniform and got my prescriptions filled out on a USAF (can't remember, it might have been a Dept of Defense, prescription, that the DEA license and MD's name had to be stamped on the paper script as the old school military prescriptions were made by the hundred thousand count to be distributed to USAF dispensaries, all over the USA including Guam, and Puerto Rico, where I often had my mainland prescriptions filled "off base" at again a local family pharmacy, from San Juan PR to Myrtle Beach SC!!! but every location has a military base in the urban area, and, a telephone number of the prescribing MD (as some MD's were Flight Surgeons on weekends only, and had a private practice in same city of military base as a officer in the Air National Guard, vs. full time active duty Flight Surgeons, (I have used both). Filled my prescriptions both on base, or on another USA military base, even US Navy bases as long as, the base was in the USA or was a possession of the USA, as I already mentioned in my "wall of text".
I had no fear, if the owner operator wanted to call my MD out of state because, I presented myself, during banking hours during the week and, was not insisting on getting my Rx filled within 15 minutes, but usually did, but, was willing to wait
for several days, to a week if necessary for, any verification calls or from the independant pharmacy to get this med for me from a local wholesaler, if he was out of stock, on a med, he "normally already carried in stock".
Moving forward, ahead, from 1971, 1972, 1973 to now, 37 years later to the year 2010, I had a NC prescription, and I was a seasonal visitor to New Mexico, and, I sought out an independent pharmacy, in New Mexico, Santa Fe, NM, (this method is harder and harder to do anywhere in the USA as many small family owned pharmacies in the USA are scarce compared to 35 to 40 years ago)!!!
Referring to the above paragraph, I did get one prescription for both C-II, Dextroamphetamine ER Capsules, mfg Barr Labs, 15 mg. x 60 and for Zolpidem Tartrate (generic for Ambien 10mg) for 30 tabs, with 1 refill, filled out of state. "once". It is my gut level feeling that the combination of a owner operator of a small family non chain pharmacy and, the actual fact that my
NC DEA licensed MD, once had a medical practice in Santa Fe New Mexico, and Albuquerque NM from 1984 until 1998, and his name was familiar to the aging owner/operator of the accommodating pharmacy....
Yes, the rules have changed, and continue to change in our ever increasing information age and I call the "War on prescription drugs" that have any abuse potential, being any med from a C-II to a C-V, federal or by state...regulators. Even with a non controlled paper RX, I would still cater to an independant pharmacy, face to face, with script in hand, and seek out an older pharmacist, hoping to find a owner/pharmacist often run by multiple members of a family within the USA.
It is laughable to me "the pharmacy police state" we live in as those who already know me, they have to see my state drivers license before they hand over the C-II, or the C-IV med to me, and, click with their cash register combo computer terminal to made damn sure no very soft C-IV class Tiger Woods favorite pill for intercourse, does not get in the wrong hands and out on the street, as, Ambien is not an aphrodisiac, as the USA press might make one think so!!! The allegation was so ridiculous to me years ago when the USA press had a heyday destroying the career of Tiger Woods, with "Ambien cluttering the Google internet" some time back!!! Those under age 40 do not remember, but, Quaalude, Sopor, Parest were the aphrodisiac's of the 1970's "off label" of course, if one were male, one could get attacked or seduced by a female, if they thought you had a Quaalude in your possession!!! No wonder so many age 55+ want to be ex patriots and flee the USA!!! Our medical system is so very different from the 1960's it is a crying shame.....just my 2 cents worth!!!
Of course, it is just common sense, to get a stockpile of meds to take to one's 2nd home, or "vacation home" like is very, very common in NE corridor, to Florida, and from Central Mid West such as Chicago, to Phoenix, as I am very familiar in both situations with the snowbird, influx from NY to Miami, or Chicago to Scottsdale AZ for many years myself with my many customers in the 1970's 1980's 1990's, and even past 9/11/2001!
This method, takes planning but that is usually what I do, I always have a minimum 6 month supply of meds, due to, being a veteran of, the flukey pharmaceutical business, with "back order shortages to the USA national Adderall crisis in the years 2011 and 2012, and even now, with it appears another Adderall crisis, and frankly, a general C-II, overall stimulant crisis, during often the last quarter of each year, and/or a stubborn and very irritating unstable "generic ADHD or Narcolepsy drug "generic" quality control crisis, to, a huge range, in the "Bioavailability" of each and every C-II stimulant, I have tried, in the last 5 years, with much frustration with Adderall I/R and Adderall ER and Dextroamphetamine I/R and Dextroamphetamine ER, it is a very sad situation....dealing with now the greedy dictator oriented insurance companies with their "holy grail" yearly formularies, of acceptable pharmaceuticals that are on their precious formulary, that can change very fast with very short notice, between the calendar years!
