That's very odd, you are normally supposed to start them the first or second day of your period, so they are immediately effective at protecting you against pregnancy, according to the FDA.
You can actually start them at any time, but if it is later in your cycle than the first or second of your period, it will take 7 days, before they become effective to prevent pregnancy, which means you will have to use a backup method of contraception until the 8th day of taking them.
The typical side effects are listed as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, weight changes, spotting, and irritability.
