Can Doxycycline Hyclate 100 Mg Cause Or Add To Depression

Can doxycycline hyclate 100mg cause depression (because of the bad effect on the stomach). I was on it for a while (large dose) until my gut could no longer take it. I went off of it (for a UTI), when I felt better. I went back on it. From that point on I have had problems. Recently I was prescribed it for another UTI. I bravely took it & before the fourth dose my gut just plain went crazy. I cannot get a good feeling between my head & gut. I had all kinds of GI exams, all came out well for an 80 year old. I'm a hurting!

The depression is most likely a combination of everything, not just due to the antibiotic.

As to the GI issues, this antibiotic can be pretty rough on the stomach and generally, people over 65 are much more sensitive to medications and their side effects. As a matter of fact, there are some medications that have proven to be so problematic that they now carry prominent warnings that they shouldn't be used in the elderly. This isn't one of those, but I wanted to mention it to give you an idea of how bad the problem can be…

Since this can be rough on the stomach and you're 80, it may just be doing an even worse number on you.

What basically happens here is…you take it for a few days, it makes you miserable, so you stop taking it for a few days until you feel better….and that lets the bacteria start to grow again and develop a resistance to the antibiotic….so in the future you end up with another infection and need another course of an antibiotic to eradicate it… I'm sure you can see that what I'm describing is a vicious cycle…

I think it's time to ask your doctor for a different antibiotic. There are others that can safely be used in someone your age that aren't known to be so harsh on the stomach and if your doctor won't help you, then it's time to see a different doctor.

There is just no reason you should have to be so miserable, in order to feel better. That's just ridiculous.
