Can A Seizure Happen When Stopping Primulot N
UpdatedHi,I had a Mirena inserted Oct '11 after being on Primulot -N for several years. I wasn't prescribed it for contraception it was to control bleeding & replace estragen as I'm 59yrs. One week later on my follow-up appt the Gynocologist said that I should've stop taking Primolut -N, I told him that I wasn't told to stop. There was still no change in Nov & my mood swings were getting worse. Dec I had another follow-up appt & a different Gyno saw me.I told him that I'm a nervous wreak & very angry, whats going on? he just kept saying `give it time, it will settle '(refering to the Mirena).
My Gyno didnt listen to me when I tried to explain that I felt stressed, angry & depressed. My friend came to visit at Xmas & couldn't believe the change in me,I was so angry with everyone, I told her no-one will listen to me. March'12 I had another follow-up appt by this time I felt like I was going insane, the way I was acting wasn't me, I felt like I was going crazy. Again the Gyno wouldn't listen & just said `but this & but that' which didn't answer why I was feeling this way. April I asked my doctor to remove it, I told her that I wasn't ready for`the funny farm', so she prescribed Primulot -N again. In May I was driving back from an appt & just stepped into the doctors surgery when10 minutes after I had a seizure. I was rushed to hospital,I had a Conic Colonic seizure. I take Lamactil for Epilepsy even though I've been diognosed to be seizure free for over 30 yrs ( I only had 2 seizures in '79). Since being on Primolut -N I feel normal again. I saw a Professor & he said that it wouldn't have been the Mirena that caused this, I'm 1 in 10 women that my `brain' agrees with the Primulot -N. I know you have to be weened off any medication before starting a new one. Could my seizure have been caused by the sudden stop of the Primulot -N ? It was a 6 month ordeal I went through, I was fortunate that I wasn't driving when the seizure happened. I had a MRI Scan done & saw a Neurologist & eveyth\ing was fine, they said that it was possibily the stress which brought on the seizure. Can you please give me some more info.

Hi, Christa! I'm very sorry to read about what you've been through. How are you feeling now?
What many women don't realize is that symptoms such as what you experienced are usually due to estrogen dominance, not due to a lack of it. Many doctors haven't even kept up on the modern studies that prove this, but it is well known and you can easily find the information online yourself, if you want.
But most menopausal symptoms are due to having too much estrogen and not enough progesterone to oppose it and keep it in balance. Your estrogen levels do drop after menopause, but you still make enough that you don't need to add it back, it's the progesterone that you stop making entirely. So, even if your estrogen levels are low, you can still have estrogen dominance, without the progesterone to oppose it.
The bleeding that you experienced is also usually due to too much estrogen….
The Primolut-N does not replace estrogen, it contains a synthetic form of progesterone, so it seems your doctors may have been on the right track, but synthetic hormones are dangerous and it likely wasn't enough to replace all the progesterone you need, since so much is destroyed in the body. When you take it orally, you actually only absorb about 10% of it. Then you went to the Mirena, which also contains a synthetic progesterone.
To explain what you really had going on here, by using these that were just adding a little progesterone, but not enough, it most likely caused you to be waking up the estrogen receptors in your body, so they were going wild and the estrogen was most likely causing your crazy symptoms and yes, it could have even caused the seizure. There are studies that have shown that high estrogen levels have caused seizures in some women and the problem was resolved when they used progesterone to balance things back out.
The anger/irritability is usually caused by excess testosterone, which is something else that is higher when you have high levels of estrogen and not enough progesterone.
To make it even worse, stress also drops your levels of progesterone, thus being worried about your symptoms and what was going on dropped them even further, allowing estrogen to go even crazier in your body.
If it's okay with your doctors and available where you live, you may want to look into trying a natural progesterone cream, these are bio-identical to the hormone in your body, rather than synthetic, which means its much safer and has far fewer risks. Since it is absorbed through the skin, you also get the full dose, without any being destroyed by your digestive process.
Hi Verwon, thank u for replying to my email. I'm new to the internet & typed in incorrect hormone I meant Progestorone not Estrogen. I'm finding it difficult to get answers from the medical profession. It's frustrating when the Specialists don't listen to the patient after having something foreign inserted their body, that makes me very angry. I had the Mirena inserted at the Hospital, but after each follow-up appt i felt as though they weren't interested & said `give it time it will settle'. I've tried Hormone cream & didn't have success. I'm not a text book case so I'm 1 in 10 women that r affected differently by medication.I even saw a Professor in Gynocology & he said that some Gynos don't know everything. I thought u were supposed to have faith in these Specialist who treat u. I'm on HRT Patches & they seem fine but my GP has tried process of elimination with other medication I'm taking eg Catapress, Efexor but the sweats r still happening ( very puzzling to my dr of 10 yrs ). I really want to find out the reason y I had this seizure. I had it inserted in 25th Oct '11 ( i visited a friend for her birthday in Sept & I was fine).1st wk of Nov at my first follow-up appt the Gyno asked if I was still taking Primilot n, I said yes, he asked me y I told him no-one advised me to stop taking them,he told me to stop at once. My friend came to visit me at xmas & noticed I was ready to fight anyone who looked sideways at me. By March '12 I felt as though I was going to have a nervous breakdown so in April I got my GP to remove it. She put me back on Primulot N again. One month later I had the seizure. It all sounds so confusing & it seems like I can't get a straight answer from anyone.I'm forntunate that I wasn't driving when I had the seizure because 10 mins after me getting out of the car & walked into the dr surgery it happened. If I was driving no-one would've been the wiser as to y & I could have killed someone. That's y I have to get some answers.Christa
