Can Xarelto Cause Gas / Flatulence?
UpdatedI began taking Xarelto again for a few weeks after my second incident of DVT and PE. Ever since I started taking it this time, I have noticed an increase in flatulence. Since this medication is the only thing that has changed in my life, besides the blood clots themselves, I am suspicious of it. Has anyone else experienced this and can simply taking gas medication take care of it. This has been a very embarrassing problem to have.

@tmpjax30,
According to the US National Institute of Health, "abdominal/stomach swelling" is listed as a possible side effect of Xarelto. I wonder if this may be playing a role in the flatulence you're experiencing? I haven't found any other articles suggesting that gas was a possibility, but if Xarelto really is the underlying culprit, I suppose the only true way to know for sure would be to take a break from it after getting the "ok" from your doctor. Temporally discontinuing treatment may or may not be feasible though depending on your situation, but my guess is that taking a gas supplement would probably suppress it for the time being.
I hope this helps!
I have been on Xarelto now for 2.5 weeks and have also noticed a real increase in flatulence. I never had this situation before but now it is not only uncontrollable but embarrassing as well. I tried taking gas X etc but it really hasn't helped much. I will check with my Doctor to see what she says and recommends to alleviate this condition.
Re: Rick (# 2)
I'm a male in my early 50s. I began taking Xarelto about a month ago and YES I have noticed an increase in gas and discomfort from the Xarelto. Although it seems ok otherwise, I may go back to Coumadin.
Re: eman (# 3)
I take Xarelto and had the same flatulence experience when taking Eliquis. Of course, everyone passes gas but this feels out of control and the smell is truly putrid. If anyone comes up with an explanation, an alternative, or a medicine that minimizes the flatulence, I'd love to hear it. I'm 73 but very active and healthy other than my Atrial Fibrillation.
I've been taking it for two days and have noticed the same!
I've been on Xarelto for a month and I have had nothing but non-stop gas uncontrollable.
Me too, it's horrible
Yep, me too, turned me into a farting machine. I’m 91 and switched from Warfin because VA Clinic changed me, I have kidney disease and read that Warfin is a little harder on the kidneys than xarelto so I’m a little reluctant to switch back.
Just this evening, I thought that Xeralto could be the culprit. Excessive gas has been with me for many of my 87 years, however, I'm "suffering" because I am expelling gas...without having any sensation ( fortunately no smell). I have researched this problem thoroughly, and bless the medical profession, but they offer no definite "cure". We gas-folk are really on our own to figure out what the cause(s) is. No thanks, I am willing to change my eating etc., but one of the joys of life is fine dining. Of course, no smoking, booze, drugs etc. Medics sat change your diet! Well, this ole dude lives to eat...not eat to live.
